Earth Day

Earth Day

on a dark and stormy night, once upon a time...
No, perhaps it was a bright and sunny day...
Oh, what the heck,
whether
the weather
Was climate appropriate no one can say...
Perhaps you could find out if you ask Frey
Who happens to be the god of earth's fertility
But only if you happen to be Norse.
Still, it happened one time
On this great spinning ball
That persons substantial
Came one and all
And chose to create
A day that would state
That the ball
On which we all
Ride like a great spinning plate
Was worth mentioning at all.
So Earth Day came to be.
The United Nations would have you believe
That the Equinox in March is worth noting.
Of course, you are not so naive
To think Americans would go without voting
So we have a different day
A month later we would say
Of course still only one day
Is the proper time to pay homage
And at least cease to disparage
This large rock that we call home.
If the other three hundred sixty four
Are still free for dumping more
Pollution all around
And garbage up the mound...
Oh, what did I say,
Pollution is politically incorrect!
Not to do it,
just say it,
Please forgive my little slip,
which likely won't be noticed,
For little about Earth Day
Whether it be the World-Wide Equinox one
or the United States month-later date
Is ever noticed
By persons substantial
Or otherwise.
How sad.

  • United Nations Earth Day is on the March Equinox (when the sun lines up with the equator)
  • The United States celebrates Earth Day on April 22, about a month later.
  • Clean earth will seem important when the true costs of dirty earth become less ignorable.
