Earth Day 40th Anniversary Poem

Ben Wood
On April 22, 2010, Earth Day will celebrate its 40th birthday. Here's a poem for the occasion:

A day of celebration for this planet called Earth
A day to soak in all of nature's worth
A day to show everything that we care
A day to make sure that we're all aware

40 years ago, an idea was born
Too long we showered Mother Earth with scorn
Too long we never stopped to give Her her due
Too long we lived our lives without a clue

Earth Day,
A time to give our flora a shout,
A time to think of what we'd be without
This World, and let our appreciation hang out
Earth Day,
It's kind of sad here in twenty ten,
Instead of thinking green every day we spend,
We still need a holiday to remind us how we're livin'

It's not just for the left, it's not just for the young
It's a day of hope and joy for everyone
It's not just for hippies, it's not just for the poor,
It's a day to help out nature and improve the score

It's not just an idea, we need to stop and see,
What if there wasn't one Earth Day but three
Hundred and sixty five
Days to help keep our lovely Earth alive

Earth Day,
A time to give our flora a shout,
A time to think of what we'd be without
This World, and let our appreciation hang out
Earth Day,
It's kind of sad here in twenty ten,
Instead of thinking green every day we spend,
We still need a holiday to remind us how we're livin'

Earth Day,
It's kind of sad here in twenty ten,
We still need a holiday to remind us how we're livin'
