Earth Day

Earth Day was started on April 22, 1970. It was created and named by a man who was also uniquely named: Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. Originally, Gaylord founded the day as a teach-in to educate college students, townspeople, and fleeting drifters about environmentalism and ways in which the environment was being threatened. Throughout time, Earth Day continues to be a day of activism and education, but has also come to signify other Earthly-related activities like recycling, planting trees, and smoking marijuana. Many people who wear tye-dye love to celebrate Earth Day. Won't you?

There are many ways to celebrate Earth Day for adults as well as children. One popular way to ring in the new Earth year is to demonstrate in rallies and non-violent assemblies condemning environmentally harmful activities like toxic waste dumping and the harpooning of baby seals. Another way is to bake cakes. Children, or socially elitist parents who want to push their children into celebrating Earth Day now have more options than ever. One fantastic way for children to enjoy their Earth Day would be to pick up strangers' garbage in public areas. As we all know, littering is contrary to being environmental, so what better way to spend April 22nd than by forcing your children to clean it up. If there is no garbage around to be cleaned and you don't have any to litter, children can also enjoy Earth Day by decorating trash cans, compost bins, and sewage containers. This way, things that are usually thought of as ugly and rancid-smelling can be beautiful too.

Another way for families to enjoy Earth Day is to visit a local zoo to learn about all the different types of animals we as a society are murdering, some to the point of extinction. Animal extinction is a great topic to discuss with your children because it also segues nicely into wilderness destruction, another great Earth Day topic. Afterwards, you and your family can play games or create elaborate examinations covering the information learned.

For those more inclined to stay indoors, first-person role-playing video games are probably nothing new. Now, there are even environmentally-themed games for you and your family to enjoy. There are games for your children where they can play as a garbage recycler, digging through huge, warm mountains of garbage to find overlooked recyclables. Oh look, Timmy, you missed a can of motor oil! These games can also be played once returning from actually picking up garbage in the real world, because odds are once your children get a taste for picking up garbage, they won't want to stop. You can look online for such fun and exciting games.

As you can see, there are limitless ways of celebrating Earth Day on April 22nd. All you need is a little imagination, and maybe a pine cone to play catch with. Do not forget the importance of this day, though, and be sure to incessantly drill this message into your children's minds through repetition and those elaborate exams. Earth Day is no longer just for hippies and potheads. Everywhere you look the world is going green, organic, and hybrid. Won't you?
