Earth Day Everyday

Stop the Litter

Teresa Mahieu
The Poem...

Earth Day Every Day

I picked up your trash today, just like I do every day.

You threw it down as on fast food you dined,

And the wind promptly blew it my way.

I really hate litter and I don't mean to whine,

But what more can I say;

To get you to stop ditching your trash,

And leaving it wherever it lay?

Why can't you keep it and add it to your stash,

Just like we did as kids in grandpa's dear old Nash?

I picked up your trash today, just like I do every day.

I pray that someday you'll join me,

Then a cleaner place mother earth will be.

Why I wrote this poem...

Earth Day 2009 is April 22nd. Many cities and towns across the country are celebrating earth day with environmentally friendly activities.

In Junction City, Kansas a city wide clean-up was done with over 200 volunteers participating on the Saturday before Earth Day. Today children planted trees in school yards and families planted gardens. My husband and I walked our property boundary and picked up trash blown into our yard from nearby fast food restaurants. I see people place their bags outside their cars in the parking lots and drive away almost daily. With trash containers available to them near the restaurant exits and a trash can I've made available behind my garage it's such a shame to see that some people have no regard for our planet or the community they live in. So we pick it up.

As Boy Scout leaders we were taught to teach our youth to Leave No Trace. The Leave No Trace promise is meant to be practiced when camping in the wilderness. Essentially it means to leave the area as good or better as the way it was found. The Leave No Trace comcept should be practicd in our daily lives also, not just scouters and not when camping only. I just wish we could teach those that leave their trash behind the Leave No Trace lesson and get the to make the promise. On Earth Day and everyday we should all Leave No Trace behind that would be harmful to our environment. Will you do your best to Leave No Trace?

Remember Earth Day should be Everyday!!
