Research eco-friendly household products
Begin a green lifestyle by researching the household products you use every day to determine if they are safe for the environment. If any of the products are toxic to animals, birds, fish, plants, or the atmosphere, find an environmentally friendly alternative. One of the most common unsafe products that people use around is chlorine bleach. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, chlorine bleach contains sodium hypochlorite which is a pesticide. Three alternatives to use in place of chlorine bleach are vinegar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide.
Recycle
Recycling programs are implemented in many cities and towns. Take advantage of recycling bins and teach your family which household containers are recyclable. Kids are never too young to take part in saving the environment and recycling is an educational and proactive way to participate in the greening of the environment. Check your town's recycling regulations for a list of recyclable products. The most common recyclables include: newspapers, junk mail, cans, plastics, magazines, and even Styrofoam.
Replace light bulbs
Change to energy efficient light bulbs on Earth Day. These light bulbs are more expensive than traditional bulbs but use only a fraction of the electricity. According to Energy Star, "an energy efficient bulb uses seventy-five percent less energy and lasts ten times as long."
An energy efficient light bulb using 13 watts of energy equals a 60 watt incandescent light bulb. One energy efficient bulb costs about $2.00. Even if you replace your light bulbs a few at a time, you would be saving energy and money on your electric bill.
Save Water by Checking Faucets
Have each member of the family check all the faucets and outdoor spigots in your home on Earth Day. A dripping faucet is a huge waste of water and can really add up over time. Also, have family members turn off the water while they are brushing their teeth or doing the dishes. Turn the water on only when ready to rinse.
Consider using only cold water for laundry, saving fuel and water heater costs. When replacing washing machines, dishwashers, and clothes dryers, check that they are energy efficient models. Many times town electric companies offer rebates for Energy Star appliances.
These are just a few of the ways that families can do their part on Earth Day and the rest of the year in saving the planet. Everyone is responsible for protecting the earth and all its goodness. Get your family involved in Earth Day activities and follow a green lifestyle.
