Earth Day Resolutions Based on Reality

My Promise to the Planet

Ranota Riegler
For Earth Day, I promise to drink at least eight glasses of water. I pledge to do this because I want to do my part against the largest greenhouse gas on Earth...water. Not many people realize that water vapor accounts for more greenhouse gases than anything else. Therefore, in order to eliminate the "Greenhouse Effect", we would have to eliminate water. Hmmm, are you willing to go without water? I'm not. Personally, I'm a huge fan of water. I love drinking in it, playing in it, bathing in it, and using it to cool myself down.

My next promise to Mother Earth is to breath. When I exhale, I release CO2. Trees enjoy CO2. As a thank you, they in turn release oxygen, which I happen to enjoy! This is the start of a beautiful relationship! Matter of fact, I'm seeing a pretty symbiotic relationship developing. Maybe I can find ways to make things a little more tree friendly! If I had a green thumb, I might put some plants in my house. I had a grandma that smoked like a freight train, and had a ton of HEALTHY plants in her home. It looked like a jungle in there. Maybe she was on to something.

On this day, I refuse to buy a hybrid. The process for manufacturing the batteries in these alleged "earth savers" is disastrous to the environment. The habitats surrounding the battery making facilities are toxic. Furthermore, at the end of these batteries lifetimes, they have to be disposed of. This results in toxic battery waste. Doesn't sound like hybrids really save the earth that much!

How about my light bulbs? CFL's? No thanks. Somehow the idea of having to take haz mat precautions when one of those puppies' breaks doesn't sound so good compared to cleaning up a broken incandescent bulb. Besides, I'm not real partial to the migraines I get from fluorescent lighting. Why bring that into my home?

Basically, water isn't bad, but it's the largest greenhouse gas. CO2 is good for plants, and plants put off oxygen, which is good for people. Why are we trying to eliminate CO2 emissions? Hybrids sound like a wonderful answer to the emissions that a gas powered car lets out, but is the production of their batteries any better? Are CFL's as good as advertised, or are they for people that are migraine and child free?
