Celebrate Earth Day in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Make a decision to recycle and attend EarthFest at the Tulsa Zoo.

Earth Day Recycle:

The Metropolitan Environmental Trust (M.e.t.) operates eleven recycling centers in and around Tulsa, Oklahoma. Locations with maps and drop-off days and times can be found here. All M.e.t. centers accept container glass, plastic bottles # 1 and # 2, aluminum cans, newspaper, office paper, magazines, oil and antifreeze, eyeglasses, household and auto batteries. Residents can drop off all recyclables except for oil, antifreeze and batteries, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Oil, antifreeze and batteries can be dropped off during manned hours.

Other items accepted at special locations are steel cans, telephone books, scrap metal and corrugated cardboard. Locations and times can be found here.

Earth Day Electronic Recycling Program at TU:

Tulsa University School Association has an E-waste drive. TU is taking old computers and electronics and will donate what can be reused and properly dispose of the rest. All proceeds will be donated to Gilcrease Middle School.

Items that will be accepted are CD/DVD players, cell phones, computer components and parts, computers, batteries of all kinds, battery backup systems, AC adapters, cameras, CD/DVD duplicators, electric lawn mowers, electric pianos, electric wheelchairs, fax machines, game consoles, generators, keyboards, laptops and notebook computers, microwave ovens, mouses, networking hardware, organs, PDA's, power supplies, printers, projectors, radios, remote controls, scanners, speakers, stereos, telephone equipment, uninterrupted power supplies, video cameras, wireless devices, workstations and TV's, which cost $15 to properly dispose.

It is all free, except for the old TV's. Many of the old electronics have heavy metals that are toxic to the environment. When disposed of in landfills, residue may seep into the soil and get into our drinking water.

The TU E-waste program will run until April 22. Items can be dropped off at Fourth Street and Harvard Avenue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. For more information, call (918) 631-2585.

EarthFest at the Tulsa Zoo:

The Tulsa Zoo celebrates Earth Day with an annual celebration party at the Tulsa Zoo. "Green" vendors will be on location in a special marketplace. Live music, arts and other activities for the kids will be available. The Tulsa Zoo will also present an Earth Fest Hero award to a member of the community making a difference. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 18. Half-price admission will be offered to anyone that brings an old cell phone for recycling. The Zoo is located at 6421 E. 36th St. North, Tulsa, Oklahoma. EarthFest is a wonderful event for the entire family.

I beleive more people that we know do recycle year around. Otherwise, our cities and communities would be total trash heaps!

It's sad that there isn't more attention paid to E-waste year-round. We are fortunate to have a computer recycling center nearby.
