Safety and a greener planet!

Investigate biodegradable, compostible and unbleached paper products. For spur of the moment picnics or camping adventures, store some safer choices of supplies to be available in your cupboard, in place of the more expensive plastic items that have to be dumped in landfills to take up space for years.

100% recycled paper

Green or unbleached paper food trays are good options, also, plates of 100 % recycled fiber. White paper soup containers with lids, folded natural fiberboard, unbleached and natural-biodegradable food boxes are popular along with snack bags for cookies, candy and sandwiches - and some can be water and grease resistant. Unbleached freezer paper and bread bags are available for the safety-minded homemaker in the area of happy family life.

Earth friendly wax paper for food preparation and storage!

A natural wax paper product that is 100% unbleached with natural soybean wax is a safe alternative. Soybean wax is safe, non toxic and biodegradable. It is renewable and can be produced by American growers. Choose this earth-friendly wax paper in the kitchen for food preparation. Make pie crusts by placing the dough between two sheets of paper and rolling it to the desired size. A biodegradable product, it can be shredded when the job is finished and added to the compost pile, where in just a matter of days it will be returned to the earth. Choosing products that will compost are a happy alternative to paying for pick-up by the trash truck service and delivery to landfills.

Reusable glass dishes and jars for food storage!

Collectibles like some of the Anchor Hocking glass-covered storage dishes are costly, but well worth the investment, as they can be reused for generations with no throw-away. A search of online auctions for "refrigerator dishes" should bring up pages of many different choices, or try yard and estate sales and auctions.

Glass canning jars - an old idea that is gaining new popularity!

Glass canning jars, wide mouth with straight sides and no shoulders, are excellent choices for refrigerated food and other storage - and even standard glass canning jars are good as they are see-through and reusable, recyclable and always safe to use with no fear of chemicals leaching into the stored food.

Vintage reusable glass-covered food-storage items!

Some of the old green-colored canning jars and embossed refrigerator containers are still around and being fully used and prized by homemakers. Glass is a long-time reusable container and the vintage items are still very attractive and functional in the modern kitchen of today. Glass is a very low cost food-storage container because it can be used over and over.

Science is opening doors to a greener, healthier environment!

Greener and more earth-friendly choices are out there for all consumers. Better decisions for a greener planet only need a little more of our time and knowledge and the result can be a safer and better world for present and future generations.

This is a great article. We should all become more conscious of how what we do affects our environment. Re-use and recycle.

What a great article. Top marks. I have been using glass storage for a while now and it works so well. I love the glass dishes/containers that have plastic lids. Some are freezer and microwave friendly. The good thing about glass is you can sterilize it.
