Earth Home Activities for Kids

Kathy Foust
Parents are weighed down by the expectations of society as well as having to meet the actual needs of the family. When it comes to going from a traditional lifestyle to living in an Earth home, there are plenty of child related issues that a parent has to consider. These issues can be tempered best if they are dealt with before the actual move so that the child has a positive outlook on the situation.

Build a model home with the child. There are a couple of positive points to building a model Earth home with your child. They can see some of the ways that your Earth home is going to be built and they may even come up with some creative ideas for it. Don't shake your head. Children's fresh minds are a wealth of imagination just waiting to find an avenue.

Discuss the activities that will go on in the home. Since you should be able to reduce your bills significantly by living in an Earth home, you might have more time to play instead of work. Or, work around the home might turn into play. Talk about the various things that are going to be done around the Earth home that are done now. For instance if you now live in an apartment and don't garden, you'll be able to plan a garden with your child.

Get creative with materials. The more recycling you can do as you build your Earth home, the better you'll feel about it. Talk about different options for flooring, windows, insulation and anything else you want to discuss. You might be surprised at how creative kids can be when their opinion is asked. For them, an Earth home might seem like a very large craft project that the whole family gets to be creative on.

Make this a positive social experience. For some kids, living an uncommon sort of lifestyle makes them feel "different". Help them to look forward to living in an Earth home by getting them excited about it and proud of what they are about to do. This can help them to deflect any negative comments at school.

Make your own Earth days. if you plan to live with limited electricity and other amenities, try doing that a few days a month. By avoiding some technology like televisions on these days, you'll end up spending more time doing family things like games and discussions rather than being planted in front of the television.

Get your child's class involved. Some schools will agree to have an Earth day that involves a class helping to build an Earth home. It's a great recycling experience for the kids and gets them out of school for the day. It also makes your child a bit more popular, at least for the day!

Though children are resilient, they sometimes have difficulty with the idea of change. To make the process easier for them and the rest of the family, you need to build excitement in them. Treat the building of your Earth home as a new adventure, because it really is. It's a mission to make a positive impact on the planet or at least to lessen the negative impact that we humans have had on the planet. Here's a tip: Add a new green habit each week or month to prepare the family for the Earth home experience.
