Earth Justice Encourages Environmentalists to Adopt a Piece of Sky

Julie Richards
A new effort, started in June by Earth Justice, allows anyone, wanting to participate, adopt a piece of the sky. This project is free to partake in. You can sign up at www.adoptthesky.org and voice how you feel about the planet's ozone layer.

Founded in 1972, Earth Justice has opened the doors for environment protection actions all over the country. What started as a court case to save Storm King Mountain on the Hudson River against the Consolidated Edison Company has grown into a nationwide drive to save our planet. They have even taken on Disney and won.

Earth Justice has the motto "Because Earth Needs a Good Lawyer" on the front page of their web-site. The mission statement reads like this: "Earthjustice is a non-profit public interest law firm dedicated to protecting the magnificent places, natural resources, and wildlife of this earth and to defending the right of all people to a healthy environment. We bring about far-reaching change by enforcing and strengthening environmental laws on behalf of hundreds of organizations and communities."

This non-profit organization has provided more than 600 clients with legal representation at no cost. The list of clients range from large organizations to community coalitions. Earth Justice is committed to enforcing the law. They give thanks to more than 70,000 contributors and other organizations for helping to support their efforts.

According to the Adopt the Sky website, 4.5 million children have asthma. Quoting from the site, "There are even days when the air is too toxic for kids and adults with sensitive lungs to go outside."

As of this writing, there has been 811 square miles adopted by concerned individuals. You can see who has adopted, what they have to say, and even check by state. You can search for friends or send a message to a friend.

There are links on the site that allow the viewer to check the air quality of the air they are breathing. Links are provided to check what warnings have been issued. The viewer is even provided with links to read letters written to the EPA for stronger laws governing air quality.

Earth Justice boasts that it has done more to protect endangered species than any other environmental agency. They claim to have been responsible for the 80% reduction in logging in the Northwest national forests.

For more information concerning this organization, you can contact the Press Secretary, Jared Saylor, at 202-667-4500.
