Earth911.org: Ecology Websites, the Good, the Bad and Ugly

Jan S
The internet is a vast wealth of knowledge when it comes to looking anything you want up. I equate it to have a library in your home. Along with looking up information on the internet comes wading through ad-laden sites that have very little to do with what they claim to have information on. Other websites are nothing more than link farms that are usually paid links to other link farms. Occasionally you can find really good websites full of the information you are looking for.

Websites on ecology, global warming, recycling and conservation have sprung up in the last few years like wild daisies dotting the cyberspace. How do you find information that pertains to the Earth? One of those daisy sites is Earth911.org, a catchy title but what does it have on it?

Well I took a look at the front page and unless the webmaster is a total idiot I would say the site got hacked. All I saw was a very jumbled mess of links and sign-on tables on top of each other. Now I have a Vista system with a widescreen monitor so technology should not have been a factor at my end. I also found that when I clicked on one of the many links it just took me to another page with one very short article and another list of links to choose from. Aside from the total chaos of the site, I think they were trying to list recycling centers.

While on the subject of good websites for the Earth I thought you might be interested in another one called Rescue our Planet. It has the type of information and layout that I like. It has one page devoted to what simple things everyone can do to help slow down if not stop global warming. That site emphasizes the fact that waste begins when you buy an item not after you need to throw it out or recycle it.

Check out both sites and see for yourself if you can find vital Earth ecology information.

Crazy things happen to a server when Oprah instructs her audience to go to your web site... like she did on Friday. Twice. Please check earth911.org out again and see what our recycling locater is all about.

Good information. I'll have to look up that website on Rescue Our Planet.

I just quickly visited the two sites, earth911 does look a bit cluttered but when you scoll dow a bit, you can find the information easily enough; rescue our planet looks a bit friendlier and I just learned something new about buying clothes; it does take common sense, but I never thought about it that way!

I will have to check those 2 sites; my 5 year-old daughter is learning about recycling in school, which is a very good thing, she makes me feel guilty about throwing recyclables in the general waste bin!

I seem to have found the major problem with the site. You have to type in www.earth911.org not just earth911.org. The earth911.org will give you the plain html format, adding the www. will give you the regular layout. That is a webmaster/developer problem that they should look into.

Sorry but I just checked again and it was having the same problem. This is early on a Saturday morning so there shouldn't be much site traffic. It could be that their site does not support all of the windows browsers.

Check it again, they had some problems yesterday. Most peoplee got a message stating the website was experiencing heavy load and please check back later, occasionally if you could get through you would see what you described. It's actually not that bad of a site. See my article or their site again.
