Earthbound Farm Organic Iceberg Lettuce Review

T. H. Pankey
Surprise, surprise! Another good-looking head of organic iceberg lettuce in a field of not-so-good heads of organic iceberg lettuce. Earthbound Farm Organic Iceberg Lettuce is the surprise head of lettuce referred to, and is sold at Wegmans. The cost is about $2.99 a head. Usually, the heads of organic iceberg lettuce from Earthbound aren't robustly large and good-looking enough to want to part with a few dollars. Though, on this particular grocery trip they were.

I'm not sure why Earthbound Farm iceberg lettuce, much more often than not, isn't a good looking head of iceberg lettuce. I venture to say, from the fields in San Juan Bautista, California, where the iceberg lettuce is grown, to Wegmans produce shelf the heads of lettuce take a pretty good beating. That's because most every head of lettuce has brown spots on it: the kind of brown spots that come from bruising. Earthbound Farm not only grows the iceberg lettuce but distributes it, too. So, unless someone else takes over for Earthbound Farms during distribution, Earthbound Farms is doing a poor job handling its logistics.

Consistently, Earthbound Farm organic iceberg lettuce isn't a very good looking head of lettuce. However, it's not only because of how the heads of lettuce are getting bruised during distribution: somehow, someway, whomever is handling the farm isn't getting a good-looking head of organic iceberg lettuce to market. The lettuce Earthbound is putting to market isn't so pitiful that in a pinch you'd still pass on it for purchase. However, when comparing Earthbound Farm organic Iceberg Lettuce, or even not comparing it to other organic iceberg lettuce and just looking at the quality of the head of lettuce in and of itself, it just isn't that great of a head of lettuce.

I've grown lettuce, so I can appreciate, somewhat, what it takes to consistently get a good-looking head of lettuce to market. Yet, what I'm seeing, again, is somehow, someway, whomever is handling the farm needs to give the iceberg lettuce more attention.

Nonetheless, this particular head of Earthbound Farm Iceberg Lettuce for which I peeled off a few dollars, and is the basis for this review, was a pretty good head of lettuce through and through. If anyone from Earthbound Farm reads this review, take the words to heart, because Wegmans is going to start rejecting your lettuce. Persons like myself will keep on walking by your lettuce you're putting to market, and, eventually, that only means one thing.
