Earthquake Hits Indiana

Carol Slater
North Central Indiana has been hit with a 4.2 magnitude earthquake following a week of cold and snow. NBC news reports that an earthquake hit Indiana about 7:56 a.m. this morning about 5 miles southeast of Greentown, Indiana. This is about 50 miles northeast of Indianapolis and is in an area that rarely sees earthquake activity. Reports are that the quake could be felt in Ohio and as far south as Kentucky. Geologists with the United States Geological Association have confirmed that it was an earthquake and have said that the state may suffer light aftershocks from it during the day.

December has given the residents of Indiana below normal temperatures and above normal snowfall. Now the weather in central Indiana is looking more spring like and temperatures will be in the upper 40's to mid 50's for the next couple of days. It seems that Mother Nature can not decide what season she wants it to be. Now an earthquake has struck the state, luckily there are not any reports of major damage or injuries.

The last earthquake to hit Indiana was in April 2008 when one of 5.2 magnitude hit around 7 a.m. It seems that mornings seem to be the time that they hit here. Indiana is not a state known for earthquakes, although they do have some that are not even strong enough to be felt. A strong earthquake is possible in Indiana although highly unlikely. The strongest earthquake that Indiana has ever seen was in 1909. Most of the earthquakes in Indiana history have occured in the 1800's. Indiana residents will usually feel the shock of quakes that occur in neighboring states.

Reports are coming out now that after further review it has been downgraded to a 3.8. I know that many 4.0 earthquakes do little damage and so I am sure that there won't be any major reports of damage. There has been one report that gutters fell off of a home during the quake. Many people have reported that their homes shook, but I felt nothing here and I live about 30 miles south of Indianapolis.

It's hard to imagine an earthquake hitting Indiana. I quess the snow and cold would be better than that! :)

We did not feel it either, Carol. But my did the news outlets go crazy. WISH TV Indy even trotted out a report on earthquake proofing construction tips.
