Earthquakes Shaking Parts of Oklahoma

Marie Lowe
Earthquakes have been rocking the Sooner State.

The Oklahoma Geological Survey Web site reports that the state records about 50 measurable earthquakes each year.

In 2009, 43 earthquakes were recorded with 27 of those occurring in Oklahoma County and seven in Lincoln County.

Most Oklahoma earthquakes register between 2.0 and 3.0 magnitudes.

However since the first of the year two of the 15 quakes recorded measured 4.0 and above.

The first quake of 2010 was a magnitude 2.8 in Oklahoma County.

Another 2.8 quake was measured on Jan. 10 in the same area.

On Jan. 12 the magnitude 7.0 quake rocked Haiti.

Two days later the quakes in Oklahoma seemed to get a little stronger with a magnitude 3.3 quake shaking Logan County followed by a magnitude 4.0 quake the next day in Oklahoma County.

On Jan. 24 a magnitude 3.7 quake was recorded in Oklahoma County.

The month of February kicked off with a magnitude 2.5 quake in the Jones area located in Oklahoma County.

On Feb. 13 the same area felt a magnitude 3.2 quake followed by a 2.8 quake on Feb. 15.

Feb.19 brought two more quakes to the same area registering magnitudes of 2.5 and 2.9.

The same area felt a magnitude 2.5 quake on Feb. 21 and a 2.1 on Feb. 22.

The next day the town of Wellston recorded a magnitude 2.5 quake.

Three days later the town of Harrah recorded a magnitude 3.1 quake.

Then on Feb. 27 the magnitude 8.8 quake shook Chile.

A few hours later Sparks, Oklahoma felt a magnitude 4.4 quake or 4.1 depending on which earthquake authority you choose to follow.

The largest quake recorded in Oklahoma occurred on April, 9, 1952, in El Reno.

Small earthquakes make me realize the earth is one amazing ball...big earthquakes make me start to anchor my stuff to the wall. - I've lived in CA and experienced the 1989 San Jose 7.1 and the recent San Diego shaker...I'll take a quake over a hurricane or tornado any day...

It's scary isn't it just how many earthquakes there are every day. The number of larger ones in the last couple of months is rather worrying to me. I am sure it's just coincidence and not a sudden increase, but to think that these events might be on the increase is somewhat scary.

I periodically check the USG world earthquake map, always surprised to see one reported in the midwestern states. Even New York city and New Jersey experience the occasional quake, but the earthquake ring is constantly active.
