The most expensive options that you have, that are also the most detailed include programs like Maya and even 3DS Max. Both of these programs are from Autodesk and are frequently the preferred choice for professional 3D artists as well. However, the reality is that these programs are not typically suited for all budgets and they are practically impossible for the average person to afford to use only for sculpting in virtual worlds.
Other options include many of the in world sculpting programs. There are a couple of major ones that are available, and both of these can be purchased for less than $20 USD, however there is a very steep learning curve associated with them, plus you are unable to use them on your computer, they are only able to be used when in world which can be a bit of a turn off. However, you can still turn the sculpt maps into an .obj file for use in other 3D applications if you choose and they are highly affordable.
Several of the offline applications that you can use that are very inexpensive includes Wings3D, as well as Blender. Both offer some great options that can be explored, and a wide range of tools to help you get started. Because Blender is open source, there are a large number of applications and plug-ins that are created to help expand the functionality, and it is something that is very affordable since it is a free program. However, most people do not obtain the same results from it that they would using a program such as Maya or 3DS, but it can certainly be a great way to get started.
By looking at all of the options that are available, you will be able to quickly and easily find the right method that works for you. Just remember, the expense of the professional software is simply not worth the thousands of dollars that it will cost for usage in the virtual worlds alone, you need to have a significant need to spend that much money.
