Stepping dates back to the mid-1900s and draws a strong cultural influence from African and Caribbean dance. During the 20th century, stepping was traditionally done by black sororities and fraternities to celebrate the "crossing over" into the membership of their organization. The celebration is still continued through the new Milena and now step groups can compete for the championship of one competition, The East Coast Step Show.
The East Coast Step Show is held annually and will mark its presence in Fayetteville, North Carolina on March 29, 2008. The show is expected to sell out at 6,500 tickets, with ticket prices between $22 and $14. Military and student discounts are given, considering Fayetteville is the home of many Ft. Bragg soldiers and Fayetteville State University.
On the night of March 29th the doors of the Cumberland County Crown Coliseum will open at 5:00 PM and the show will start at 6:00 PM. Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased at Ticket Master.
The best Greek and college step teams will be performing for the championship trophy with prizes totaling $10,000. Featured step teams include: Kappas, Deltas, Omegas, Alphas, Akas, SG Rhos, Zetas, Sigmas, and Iotas.
By attending you're not only guaranteed to be entertained but you're also helping these Greek organizations support their communities. Usually, a portion of their prize winnings will go towards scholarship funds and extracurricular activities to improve the area they live in. So, come see what these sororities and fraternities have poured their heart and soul into.
