East Tennessee Fall Colors and Farmers Market Products

East Tennessee fall colors and farmers markets go together. The fertile soil is perfect for growing fruits and vegetables. Fall is no exception. As the weather cools, fall colors are not the only thing that East Tennessee has to offer. Autumn farmers markets offer the same explosion of colors and a variety of tastes.

Locals like the farm fresh goodness of a farmers market. Travelers can enjoy fall colors and shop for gift items. Some vendors will start bringing out seasonal craft items for the winter holidays. It isn't uncommon for people do the bulk of their Christmas shopping from September through the middle of December.

Farmers markets exist because produce and other items are straight off of the farm in Tennessee. When fall colors are out people want to know what fruits or vegetables are available in autumn. If you aren't a regular shopper (and sometimes if you are) having a guide like this article can be helpful.

When seeing the fall colors shopping at a farmers market in East Tennessee it helps if travelers know know two things. Cash is typically the only form of accepted payment. Reusable tote bags are stronger and can hold more items than smaller plastic bags.

Farmers market customers also need to know that the following list is to be used a guide only. Like East Tennessee fall colors there may be variations in the types of available farm products. Altitudes and terrain can make a difference in the growing season just as they do with changes in fall colors.


In general, this is what farmers market customers may be able to expect this autumn.

Canned items

Jams, jellies and preserves are often available at East Tennessee farmers markets. These are canned during the summer months as the produce ripened and are usually sold until a vendor's stock is exhausted. Honey and eggs become less plentiful but may be available well into autumn.

Apples

Autumn is the prime time for apple picking. Find them at a farmers market in autumn or visit and orchard. Look for Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Jonagold and others. Apple butters will be offered at many farmers markets.

Vegetables

Seasonal vegetables in East Tennessee can include corn, cucumbers, eggplants and some varieties of lettuce. Okra, peppers and tomatoes will be available in early autumn.

Other fruit

Grapes, plums are potentially available. Raspberries may still be in supply in supply in East Tennessee. Watermelons may continue into early fall at farmers markets.

Gourds and pumpkins

When people think of autumn they often think of gourds and pumpkins. Apples, pumpkins and gourds are the produce are the most easily recognized of all autumn farmers market products. In East Tennessee these can start coming in late September but become more widespread among farmers markets into October.

Bakery

Apple bread, artisan bread loaves, pumpkin bread and fried pies are common at farmers markets in East Tennessee in autumn. Buyers can find tempting cakes, cookies and other treats that feature fall fruit.

People often head to East Tennessee to take in the fall colors. This year, why not add a stop at a local farmers market. It can be the best way to take a little bit of the glorious fall colors home with them.
