Easter - the day
millions of Christians conveniently
remember they are Christian;
for a day.
Easter - the time
when followers of the Christ
celebrate the gift of life
in the echo of rites to the older gods -
the ones who do not mind
being forgotten, who sit,
quiet, in the forest corners,
lost in thought upon the mountains,
and bathing their toes in the sea
until you remember them.
Easter - the end of Lent,
forty-days of fasting, prayer, and penance
whose traditions are barely remembered
in some corners of this modern world.
Easter - the day whose name is rooted
in the Hebrew Passover, and the day
whose name is the constant contention
of linguists everywhere.
Easter - the day the pagan is welcomed
into the Christ House; when the worshipers
of the single god embrace the Rabbit
of Fertility, while handing out ancient
symbols of rebirth; symbols so ancient
they were ancient when the eggs
were passed about for Nowruz -
the New Year of The Ancient
Persians.
Easter - virtually every historical,
and religious, meaning points
to life, to rebirth - all
except his.
Easter - the day a world celebrates
light is the day that the darkness
of one soul begins to flare
into the darkest light
of the night.
