Fun Easter Activities and Gift Ideas for Your Little Gardeners

Deb Martin-Webster
Easter baskets are usually filled with all kinds of sweets and chocolates none of which are very healthy for kids. I remember sneaking so much candy from my basket that I was sick the next day. I couldn't go to school because of all the stuff I'd eaten.

As a former Associated Content-Yahoo Featured Contributor for Gardening, I still enjoy writing articles that promote the personal pride and satisfaction of home gardening. For Easter I thought how cool would it be to replace the traditional dyed eggs and jelly beans with some non-traditional gardening activities and gift ideas. Here are a few you may want to try.

Garden Easter Basket Recycled Grass: You can find fancy gardening baskets at most home and garden stores. Generally, they are cheaper than the seasonal Easter baskets you'll find at the big box stores. If you have a shredder let them shred old wrapping paper or tissue paper to use as Easter grass. Always perform this activity with adult supervision.

Eco-Garden Easter Egg Hunt: Purchase packs of multi-color, reusable, plastic hollow eggs. You can find them in packs of 10 at the dollar stores. Pull them apart, fill them with wildflower seeds then hide them around the garden. When a child finds an egg let them take it apart and sow the seeds in their flower garden. They'll be surprised by the beautiful variety of flowers that blossom over the summer.

Easter Bulb Hunt: Wrap a dozen or two individual flower bulbs in pastel tissue paper and hide them in places in or near your bulb gardens. When a child finds one let them plant it where they found it. Next year they will have a new crop of daffodils, hyacinths and tulips to remember their Easter activity.

Mini Watering Cans: Kids love to water their gardens. Why not use a small brightly colored watering can instead of an Easter basket. When their Easter goodies are gone they will have a functional piece of gardening gear.

Easter Gardening Outfit: Roll up a pair of new overalls and mini gardening tools preferably recycled plastic and put them in a mini wheel barrow. Add a new pair of colorful Crocs™ or gardening boots and they'll be ready to work in their spring and summer gardens in style.
