Easter Bread is Traditional Internationally

Recipes from Around the World Are Sweet, Fruity, Spicy or May Contain Cheese or an Egg Baked In

Mary Martin
Easter bread graces the sunrise service buffet table, the Easter dinner table as well as making a delightful and welcome gift. This traditional holiday food is made all around the world in various forms. The soft, luscious dough may be sweet, contain fruit or nuts, have and egg or two baked into it or may be a hardier bread, perhaps with chunks of meat or cheese. You will find links here to recipes, information and pictures of many of these delicious breads.

Portugal

Eggs that may be natural or colored are baked into bread at Easter in Portugal. The bread may be shaped into a round loaf with a single egg baked into the center or a ring with five brightly colored eggs baked into the bread.

Croatia

Colored eggs nestled in twisted bread ropes and baked become Easter Bread Dolls. These creative individual servings are decorative and almost a complete breakfast.

Columbia

Specialty bread pans in the shape of doves help form the Colomba Pasquale or Easter Dove Bread. The doves may be shaped by hand traditionally, but shaped pans sure do make it easier.

Dutch

This bread is a Fruited Easter Bread or Paasstol. Sweet and fruity, it would be good served for breakfast or later with tea or coffee.

America

Most of the bread recipes I found are similar to some of the traditional breads of other countries made with a flair all their own. Try Orange Filled Easter Bread with colored eggs, a recipe from Country Living or one of the 20 listed with All Recipes Best Easter Breads.

Vegan or Low Carb

I did find a recipe for a vegan Easter bread as well as an Atkins recipe for a Greek low carb Easter Bread. What a great find for those wanting a treat while staying true to their diets.

So many countries have delicious recipes to share. I found Russian Kulich, Italian Cheese Bread, Greek, Tsoureki Paschalino, Ukrainian Paska and Armenian recipes for traditional Easter breads.

Finding a recipe for a tempting Easter bread treat is not difficult. Trying to decide which recipe to try is. Just looking through the many bread recipes inspires most cooks to try more than one recipe. Any of these breads would be welcome throughout the holiday season and well into summer.
