Easter Craft Ideas: Green Square Eggs

Landra Lynn Jacobs
Decoupage Easter eggs are a wonderful way to get away from the gaudy plastic or fragile real egg varieties, and add a bit of modern style to a classic tradition. These green square eggs look wonderful placed in a small basket or bowl.

For this project, you will need:

- Artic Frog "Hopscotch Squares" Print Scrapbook Paper (available in stores or online at Paper Addict)

- Scissors

- Craft knife

- Acrylic spackling compound

- Medium grit sandpaper

- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White

- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Celery

- 3 inch Styrofoam eggs (found in craft stores and online at Save-On-Crafts)

- Mod Podge or other decoupage medium

- Paper cup

- Damp paper towel

- Newspaper or a drop cloth

This project contains paints and glues which might be a little bit messy. It is highly recommended to coat your workspace with newspaper or a drop cloth prior to beginning the project.

Gently apply a thick amount of acrylic spackling compound to the three inch Styrofoam eggs. Smooth the compound with your fingers, making it even all around the egg. Set the egg in the paper cup to dry overnight. Repeat this process with however many eggs you wish to complete in this project.

Carefully sand each egg smooth with medium grit sandpaper. Spray each egg with a generous coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Allow the primed eggs to dry fifteen to twenty minutes before adding a second coat of primer. Set in the paper cut and dry for an hour.

Spray each egg with two coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Celery. Allow the light green paint to dry for twenty to twenty five minutes before repeating the process. Continue to do this until you have reached a desired shade of green. Dry the eggs for two to three hours before continuing.

With scissors and a craft knife, cut the Artic Frog "Hopscotch Squares" Print Scrapbook Paper into 1/2 inch wide strips. Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the paper, and wrap the paper around the eggs. Smooth any bubbles out from the paper with your fingers. Cover the eggs completely in paper. Wipe away any excess glue with a damp paper towel. Dry the eggs overnight.

Cover each egg with seven or eight coats of acrylic finishing spray. Allow the eggs to dry additionally overnight before displaying them.

TIP: Apply as much or as little paper to the eggs. Show as much of the green paint underneath as desired.
