If your children enjoy the Advent calendars around Christmas time, they'll also enjoy Advent Easter Eggs! Teach the Easter story in a memorable way. Here are the instructions to make them...

Supplies:
========
12 plastic Easter eggs
Marker or craft pen
Paper
A chunk of bread (or a cracker or croƻton) (day 1)
Coins (real ones, plastic ones, or foil-covered chocolate ones) (day 2)
A piece of purple cloth (day 3)
A piece of branch with thorns on it (day 4)
A length of leather cord or rope (day 5)
A cross (day 6)
Nails (day 7)
Sign (a bit of index card or stiff paper) (day 8)
Sponge (day 9)
Cocktail spear (or a toothpick) (day 10)
A stone (day 11)

Step 1 ~
Using the marker or craft pen, number the eggs 1 through 12.

Step 2 ~
Write or type out the following Bible verses on strips of paper, and roll them up like scrolls.

DAY 1 - 'And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed [it], and brake [it], and gave [it] to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.' - Matthew 26:26

DAY 2 - 'Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, And said [unto them], What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.' - Matthew 26:14-15

DAY 3 - 'And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his [head],' - Mark 15:16-17

DAY 4 - 'And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put [it] upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!' - Matthew 27:28-29

DAY 5 - 'And [so] Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged [him], to be crucified.' - Mark 15:15

DAY 6 - 'Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led [him] away. And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called [the place] of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.' - John 19:16-18

DAY 7 - 'But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.' - John 20:24-25

DAY 8 - 'And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.' - Luke 23:38

DAY 9 - 'And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled [it] with vinegar, and put [it] on a reed, and gave him to drink.' - Matthew 27:48

DAY 10 - 'But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.' - John 19:34

DAY 11 - 'And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.' - Matthew 27:59-60

DAY 12 - 'And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.' - Matthew 28:5-6

Step 3 ~
Put each scroll into it's corresponding numbered plastic Easter egg, along with the item that is the symbol for that day. Note that the twelfth egg will be empty (except for the scroll), just as they tomb was found empty.

On the twelve days leading up to Easter, open one egg each day with your children. Read the verses together and discuss the significance of the contents of each egg, as they retell the Easter story.

** The verses in this article are from the King James Version. If your children are very young, you may want to substitute the corresponding passages from a children's Bible.
