Easter Egg Decorating Craft: Egg Head Family

Need a New Way to Decorate Your Easter Eggs? Make an Egg Head Family!

Darlene Michaud
One of the most fun crafts for Easter is decorating hard boiled eggs. But, you are not limited to dunking your eggs into food coloring to decorate them. Instead, you can turn your batch of eggs into an egg head family by making bodies out of empty toilet paper tubes and using the hard boiled eggs for the head. Then you can dress and decorate the family using ordinary craft supplies such as construction paper, glue and markers.

Below you will find instructions on how to create an egg head family with links to images to guide you. You can use white eggs or brown eggs for any of these family members. If you are going to eat the hard boiled eggs, use non toxic markers to draw on facial features. And keep the heads (the eggs) in the refrigerator until you are ready to display your art. If in doubt, toss the eggs out!

Easter Egg Decoration: Egg Head Dad (see image here)

Cut a piece of toilet paper tube three or four inches long (or however tall you want dad to be). Cover the piece of tube with two different colors of construction paper, making the upper half the shirt and the lower half the pants. Cut a small bow tie and glue it to the top of the shirt. Draw a line with a black marker to create legs. Cut two arms out of construction paper and glue them to the sides of the tube. Draw two buttons on the shirt using the marker. Draw a face on the egg and make a pair of glasses using wire (you can use a bread tie). Cut two small ears out of construction paper and glue them to the sides of the egg. Create hair by gluing on a small strip of anything fuzzy, such as craft fur.

Easter Egg Decoration: Egg Head Mom (see image here)

Cut a piece of toilet paper tube two or three inches long (you can make mom a bit shorter than dad). Cut a piece of construction paper to fit around the tube. Cut slits around the bottom of the paper to form pleats in the skirt and glue the skirt in place. Cut arms from construction paper and glue them on the sides of the tube. Draw a face and freckles on the egg. Make hair by tying some strands of yarn together with a ribbon then glue the hair to the top of the egg.

Easter Egg Decoration: Egg Head Grandpa (see image here)

Cut a piece of toilet paper tube three or four inches long (or however tall you want grandpa to be). Cover the tube with any color construction paper you want. Draw lines on the tube to make it look like a suit coat (use the image as a guide). Cut arms out of construction paper and glue them to the sides of the tube. Draw a face on the egg using a marker. Pull wisps of cotton from a cotton ball and glue the wisps under the nose to create a mustache. Then glue pieces of cotton balls on each side of the head for hair.

To make other family members, just let your imagination run wild! You can make a young girl by making pony tails or braids for the hair using yarn. You can make a young boy by crafting a little baseball cap out of construction paper. You can make a baby by cutting the toilet paper tube just an inch long then wrapping the tube with fleece or flannel to make it look like a baby blanket.

If you want to make this a craft that will last a very long time, you can use styrofoam eggs for the heads. Then you can use the egg head family over and over again each Easter, and you can add to the family each year too!
