Easter Sunday Services

Peggy Montgomery
Easter lilies perfume the air.

Pastel women with blue hair stroll slowly up the

aisle so all can see their new attire.

Tiny candles flicker on the alter under the

One they come to honor.

Genuflecting on arthritic knee, they take their seats.

Smiling and nodding at friends and neighbors,

slowly a quiet settles over the crowd.

Dressed in his best, the Holy Father takes his place

in front of his flock.

On this most holiest day of the year,

he is assured of a full house and

is not disappointed.

New life and rebirth are the theme of his sermon.

The cost of sin and the price that was paid.

Heads nod at his words and when the money plates are passed,

he is sure the coffers will be full this day.

As the people rush out of the church and hurry off to their feasts of

ham with all of the trimmings,

he sadly shakes his head and knows that next Sunday;

his sermon will be given to a church that echoes his words

because it will be almost empty again.
