In a fast tempo game and his first start, Eastern Carolina quarterback Dominique Davis highlighted a career performance with a highly improbable 33 yard touchdown pass to Justin Jones as ECU came from behind to beat Tulsa 51 to 49. Davis finished the game 27 of 46 for 383 yards and six total touchdowns (five passes, one rushing TD) to lead the Pirates to a 1-0 start in Conference USA play. Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne finished 28 of 43 for 399 yards and five touchdowns, including one in the final two minutes that looked like a game-winning score for the Hurricanes. Each quarterback had one interception. However, in this shootout featuring over 1100 yards of total offense and 100 points, nothing was for certain, as ECU proved.

ECU also went 3 of 3 in fourth down conversion attempts, which was key in helping the Pirates down the field. Another key statistic for this game: 10-the final 10 drives ended in touchdowns.

In all, this game went a long ways in disputing theories that ECU is in the midst of a rebuilding year under first-year coach Ruffin McNeill, who returned to ECU to coach at his alma mater, or Davis, the former Boston College quarterback who led BC to the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. Just far Davis and McNeill can take ECU is anyone's guess. However, if they stay healthy, ECU has definitely has the offense to take them as far as anyone in C-USA.
