The holidays are over, decorations have been taken down and stored and you are left with the bitter, cold weather of winter. Does your home look warm and inviting? Or does it seem a bit cold and bare after all of the holiday events and parties? Here are a few of my favorite decorating tips for warming up the home for the cold winter months to not only make your home warm and inviting, but cozy and comfortable, too!
Pillows, Throws and Maybe a New Rug
One of my favorite things to add for the winter is several pillows and throws in warm colors to the sofa and chairs in the den or family room. You may also want to consider a small to medium throw rug. What better way to enjoy a movie in front of the fire than to cozy up in a nice warm blanket surrounded by comfortable pillows?
Coffee Table Books
Another easy decorating tip that guests enjoy is having one or two interesting "coffee table" books on the coffee table. Having a book with an outstanding photograph on the cover right before your eyes, is hard to resist picking up and taking a peek inside. One of my personal favorite coffee table books is C.C. Lockwood's "Atchafalaya."
Candles
Candles are one of my favorite accent pieces for decorating in the winter. Candles are available in all shapes, sizes and colors. You can use them alone or in groups. There are also many different styles of candle holders on the market that make decorating with candles just a matter of finding the perfect spot to place them. I also love the warmth a burning candle adds to a room. Consider an earthy cancle set like this one from Amazon.
Wall Hangings and Pictures
Changing out the pictures hanging on the wall is another good way to make your home more inviting and "in with the season." Replacing artwork with winter scenes or possibly even wildlife is a great way to change up a den or family room. You don't have to go out and buy masterpieces that cost a fortune, set out to explore in an antique store. You will be surprised at what treasures you may find.
Flowers
I love flowers and hate the way fresh flowers never last longer than a week at most. Invest in a bouquet of good quality silk flowers in deep colors that will remind you that spring will be coming soon! Flowers liven up the room and also give a pop of color. You can also put them in any room of the house that needs a little boost! Arrange in a vase that you probably already have for a new centerpiece or tabletop decoration.
These are just a few quick and easy ideas for decorations that anyone can do to make their home look and feel warmer for the cold winter months. They are also inexpensive and affordable to pull off. Enjoy your redecorating to make your home more warm and inviting for the long and bitter winter!
