My daughter may be all grown up and away at school. Like most kids, she will occasionally phone home asking "How did you make that" or "How did you do this". Often, what she is looking for are particular recipes. I've adapted the following to become an easy apple dumpling recipe for college students.
Since college students also have the habit of losing things I decided to post it here. Not only will she and her friends enjoy it but others might too. Included are some tips and substitutions. Substituting ingredients will change the taste but will make the easy apple dumpling recipe for college students easier for those with limited ingredients and budgets.
These are high in sugar and starch but they taste terrific. The easy apple dumpling recipe for college students may be eaten plain, with ice cream or whipped topping.
To make the easy apple dumpling recipe for college students you will need --
Deep baking dish (a quiche plate may be substituted but not a cookie sheet.)
Two or three hot pads or oven mitts.
Large bowl
Large spoon
Friends to share them with (optional).
Here's the rest of the scoop:
Easy apple dumpling recipe for college students is --
Ingredients
2 large apples
1 can of inexpensive biscuits
1 tablespoon of butter or margarine
¼ cup of white granulated sugar
¼ cup of pourable brown sugar (can substitute for white sugar if that's what you have.)
1 tablespoon of apple pie spice (may substitute allspice or cinnamon)
½ cup of orange juice
½ teaspoon of vanilla extract (or imitation vanilla)
Mixing and preparing the easy apple dumpling recipe for college students
Preheat the oven to the temperature specified on the biscuit can. (This is often 400 degrees.)
Place the butter in the baking dish.
Peel the apples. (Use what you have on hand or buy your favorite.)
Remove the core and cut into 8 wedges.
Pat a piece of biscuit dough in your hand to flatten it.
Wrap this around the apple wedge. Pinch the sides and ends to close it. (This may not wrap all the way around the wedge but should get 99% there.) Repeat until all the wedges have been used.
By this time your butter should be melted. Remove the pan from the oven and swirl to coat the edges and bottom of your pan.
Place biscuit covered apple wedges in the pan. Leave a little room around each for the biscuits to expand and for the juice to sink in.
Mix the sugars and spice together in your large bowl. Pour this over the apple dumplings in the baking dish.
Pour the orange juice over that.
Slide into the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes. You want the dumplings to be hot and golden brown. Remove the pan from the oven and set on the third oven mitt or hot pad.
Call your friends and enjoy your pan of easy apple dumplings for college students. If not consumed immediate it may be kept in the fridge for 5 days (lots of luck).
Reheat the individual dumplings in the oven or microwave for 20 seconds. Too much microwave heating will make them hard. If not warmed in 20 seconds you can add additional time. Check the dumpling every 10 '" 15 seconds until warm.
