Easy Back to School Snacks

Snacks for the School Day

Maggie Ray
Are you stumped when trying to come up with a list of back to school snacks? I've been packing school snacks and feeding hungry students after school for more than twenty years. For some children, back to school snacks are easy. For others, finding an easy snack they will eat is a challenge. If you are a parent with more than one student, finding a school snack all enjoy can be difficult. Snacks don't have to be prepackaged. Homemade items are often healthier and better received by the child. If you can involve the child in the process of making the after school snack, or choosing what is taken to school each day, he is more likely to eat the snack.

Home made Healthy Kids Snacks
A healthy homemade back to school snack can be as simple as cutting up vegetables and sending your favorite dip with it. Finding a way to make a special shape cut or packing in a container the child likes makes the healthy snack even more enjoyable. If your child will eat muffins, a fruit muffin made with whole wheat flour is healthy yet sweet enough to be considered a special snack by the school child. Top a fruit muffin with a cream cheese spread and some raisins to make it even more fun. Pancakes rolled up while fresh off the grill are a big hit with younger children and can be prepared as a healthy back to school snack when making up freezer stock of breakfast items.

After School Snacks
When thinking about snacks to send back to school with your child, don't forget the need for a stash of after school snacks at home. After school snacks may be easier to keep on hand because you can consider those which require refrigeration. Making your own pudding cups is less expensive than the prepackaged ones and may be a pleasant after school snack for the child. As fall holidays come closer in date, making items tied to the season makes the snack more fun. Jello jigglers cut with Halloween cookie cutters are a fun October after school snack.

Easy Back to School Snack Ideas
If you don't have time for baking homemade goods, look for the best deals on healthy kids snacks at the grocery store. To make back to school snacks easy yet less expensive, consider buying a large bag of an item and repackaging it to small plastic bags or reusable containers. Make your own fruit cocktail cups in a small leftover plastic container by dividing up the contents of a larger can. Don't forget to pack the spoon for this type of school snack. Another easy back to school snack item is pepperoni and cheese. If your child will eat cubed cheese, a few cubes in a container with several slices of pepperoni make a good snack choice.

One of the easiest ways to decide on back to school snacks is to list the items your child eats and consider how those items can be repackaged to be school snack. For those which cannot be taken to school, add them to the list of afterschool snacks. Rotate the snack items so the child does not become tired of the food and refuse to eat it in the future.
