Nothing updates a bedroom more than a new comforter set. If you do not have enough money consider buying a duvet cover. A duvet cover is not in your budget? Do not worry simply purchase a few decorative throw pillows. You can also purchase a few new pillowcases to quickly update the look of your old ones.
Change the layout of the room. If the bed is by the window consider moving it to the other side of the room. This gives the feeling of a fresh new start without the cost of one.
Do not under estimate the power of color. Choose a focal wall and repaint it. If painting is too time consuming consider adding some decorative decals. I personally love circles. These are commonly used to decorate nursery's and can be purchased relatively inexpensively. If you are creative try your hand at stenciling a few designs on the wall. For another fun option you can use sponges and paint to create a totally fresh design.
New curtain rods, curtains, or blinds can add a new feel to the space. If you have hardwood floors consider adding an area rug for a new element.
Lighting can drastically change the overall feel of the bedroom. If you have a large floor lamp consider swapping it for a smaller side table lamp for a more intimate feeling. By adding a decorative night light you add fun into the space.
Change out the family photos for a quick, easy, and money free update. Bring artwork from other rooms of the house to your bedroom. Sometimes all you need to do is swap the artwork for a quick update.
If you use a dresser or have another place that your use to store most of your clothing then consider taking off your closet doors. You can either add shelving and cubes and give yourself that open plan concept or you can ditch the closet idea all together. In my room I took off the closet doors and actually made the area into a nice little sitting nook. I completed the area with a comfy chair, small table, and a reading lamp.
If you do not have a headboard add one to your room. This creates a focal point and will instantly update the look of your bedroom.
Clutter often makes a room feel smaller than it actually is. Clean up the room; mount your television on the wall, limit the amount of items you have on the floor, and keep your side table clear of receipts and loose change.
