The key to getting the most affordable decorations is to of course, buy after the season is over. Christmas merchandise is heavily discounted at this time, so this is the best way to stock up. If you like to have the latest trends, then you many not want to buy last season's hot items, but you can still get the basics. Plain lights and ornaments never go out of style, so stock up on white or multicolored lights, bows and ornaments. There will also be numerous sales around the holidays, so keep checking your Sunday flyers.
The easiest way to decorate your yard is to keep it simple. White lights around your house, on the trees and/or bushes and around your gate or fence keep it classy. Many of these lights can be left in place year round, and therefore making it easier to set up next Christmas. Most major stores carry lights and will have many sales throughout the season. Even CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid will have specials on simple Christmas lighting.
Animated figures and lit animals, trees or other 3D type decorations are easy to set up and look great in a large yard. Make sure not to crowd too much in a small space. Also, inflatable decorations are nice, but when the power is off they deflate and don't look as great anymore. Plus, if they are not set up well, they can blow away and get damaged.
A live or artificial wreath on your door also brings class to your decorations and is super easy as many are already decorated. You can also purchase a pre lit wreath or string it yourself. I also like to place a giant wreath in between my two second floor windows.
If you have trees in your yard, why not decorate them as well as light them. I have found large ornaments in previous years at stores like Target and Wal-Mart and their respective websites. Most dollar stores, especially Dollar Tree, also sell small plastic ornaments. Since these ornaments are so inexpensive, it won't hurt too much if they get lost or damaged. The ones I have purchased have been very durable and I have used them for several years now. The larger ornaments look particularly nice.
Finally, placing your indoor Christmas tree in front of a front window adds a nice touch to your overall decorations. It brings a little more magic to the total atmosphere of the season.
