Easy Cage Training for Dogs

Kevin Smith
Potty training your dog is one of most important forms of training necessary in order to incorporate your dog into the family. Many people struggle with this and that is normal. Some people choose to take their dogs on long walks. Some have their dogs on a schedule and other people cage train their dogs. Cage training is great for busy people or lazy people. Cage training a dog is actually easier than people probably think.

I have two dogs. One who is almost four years old and another who is almost one years old. Both of them are cage trained. Obviously it was easier to train the younger dog because younger dogs tend to take up the habits of older dogs when they have one around. Training my older dog wasn't so difficult either. If you want to cage train your dog, all you have to do is follow a few simple steps consistently, and the dog eventually will let you know themselves when they have to go.

In the beginning you're going to have to totally work with the dog. Depending on your schedule of work, school, or whatever else you may do on a daily basis, I recommend waking up 30 minutes earlier in the morning solely for the purpose of cage training your dog. Obviously you need to make sure that your dog is sleeping in the cage at night. When you get up, the first thing you need to do is let your dog outside. You must watch your dog or even go outside with your dog. Something I did with both of my dogs is go outside with them and continuously tell them, "go potty!" Of course in the beginning they had no idea what I was talking about, but I continued to say that until eventually they associated me saying, "go potty" with them going outside to go potty.

Your dog will probably sit there and just look at you at first, but you have to keep encouraging them. I don't recommend that you use treats because that will distract them from what you're trying to teach them. I was lucky that my dogs would always go within fifteen minutes of us being outside, but if it takes longer be patient with them. As soon as your dog starts to go, praised them and pet them. The reason this works is because dogs associate their praise or discipline to whatever they had done within a few seconds of receiving it. So they will associate a certain action with pleasing you or displeasing you. Naturally dogs live to please their master.

That is pretty much it. I would do that in the morning and do it again as soon as I'd come home from work. After doing this consistently every single day for about two weeks, my dogs began to jump up at the door when it was time for them to go potty. Accidents still happen from time to time, but my dogs are free to roam throughout the house when I am there and when I'm not. Cage training is easy and most dogs catch on pretty fast.
