The most obvious of all things you need to do to make sure that your car continues to run at its best is to make sure you get your oil changed every three months or 3000 miles. Whichever comes first. You could change your own oil if you'd like. Though it may be cheaper for you to do this, the work is harder. Sometimes it's not cheaper. If you just check around town for deals, you may be able to find a shop that will do your oil change for as little as $15. I personally want my car to run great so I don't mind paying $30 to $40 to have my oil changed every three months or so. Skipping this can be devastating to your vehicle. My car is 15 years old and I always, almost everyday, see cars much newer than mine pulled over on the side of the road, broke down. So make sure you get your oil changed regularly.
As far as the outside of your car goes, that is also easy to keep up with, and you can also do it yourself. You can take your car to a car wash or wash it at home. Whichever you choose to do, it should be done regularly to keep the paint clean and protected. Not washing your car on a regular basis will cause the dirt to collect and eat away at the coating, and when you attempt to wash it off, you will be unsuccessful. Don't be lazy. If you have an hour to sit and play video games, surf the Internet, or watch TV you have enough time to wash your car. It will only take you 15 to 20 minutes.
If you have a newer car, waxing should definitely be done on a regular basis. Most people don't wax their cars, but it can definitely help keep the paint shinning and looking nice. After good wax, the vehicle paint should be able to be used like a mirror. Yes, you should be able to see your reflection quite well. Waxing is not necessarily critical but it will definitely make a difference in the long run.
Something many car owners don't do is keep the interior of their cars clean. Regularly vacuuming, wiping down of the dashboard, and inside door panels should be done. This is especially true for single people. Nice paint with a dirty interior is not going to leave a very good impression on someone you just met. Your car is a reflection of yourself.
So instead of making excuses, make time to care for your vehicles because their almost just like pets, and you would be sad if everyone talked about how nasty and ugly it is or worst case, it died on you.
