Easy, Cheap, Fun Entertainment

Spent all your money on Christmas presents? Are you on a budget? Here are things you can do for fun without putting a huge dent in your wallet!

Throw a Potluck Dinner Party

Invite friends over and ask everyone to bring a different course, dessert or beverage. That way, you can hang out in good company and save a lot of money by not eating in a restaurant or going to a bar. You can pick specific themes--like Mexican, Chinese, Vegetarian or low-calorie. This is also a great way to celebrate special occasions like a holiday or birthday.

Get Netflix

And take advantage of the movies you can watch on Instant Netflix, either on your computer or on your T.V. Have a viewing party with friends or a movie marathon. Not only do you save money by not having to rent movies or pay late fees, you also save on gas money and don't have to spend the time driving to your local movie rental store.

Go to a Museum or Gallery

If you're an art-fan, look up when the museums in your city have Pay-As-You-Wish nights. Most large museums have them, and they are a great time to check out the latest exhibit or re-visit your favorite painting in the collection. Also keep an eye out for free lectures or screenings. As museums struggle to attract new visitors, most have developed wonderful and affordable public programming.

If you are lucky to live in an area with many art galleries, visit those for free looks at interesting art that may not be established or conventional enough for museums to collect. Take advantage of Gallery Walks that your city may host, where a gallery itinerary is planned out for you and all you need to do is put on comfy shoes and take in the sights.

Explore Your City's Sights

Ride your bike and see where the bike route takes you (remember to bring a map and some refreshments!) Or go on a walking tour of your neighborhood. You'll be surprised by how much you don't see when you are rushing to work in your car or on a bus or subway.

Visit the Library

Libraries, like museums, also offer great public programming. You can also just check out a new book--it doesn't have to be a novel. Try a cookbook or exercise book and experiment with something new. Rent a new CD or film you've been meaning to see. Check out a language learning program and pick up some phrases in a foreign language for your next vacation. The options are endless, just remember to return whatever you check out!

There are many great free things you could do in your free time other than watch T.V. So get out there and see what your city has to offer!
