Easy Christmas Crafts for Kids: Pompom Christmas Wreath Doorknob Decoration

This Project Takes Only a Few Minutes when You Use Pompoms from the Craft Store!

Jill Davidson
This pretty Christmas Wreath doorknob decoration is easy enough for even the youngest children to create, but will require the assistance of an adult for the cutting and glueing. Premade pompoms from the craft store will make this project super-quick to complete, but you can make your own pompoms if you have the time and inclination. Instructions for making your own pompoms are given after the basic project instructions.

For each pompom Christmas wreath, you will need:

One small, disposable plastic container lid about 4-1/2" in diameter.

Eight green 1-1/2" pompoms

3" Christmas bow

X-acto knife or other sharp cutting tool

Craft glue or a hot glue gun.

Begin by using the X-acto knife to make cross-shaped cuts (about 2-1/2" long) in the center of the lid, and then another cross shape in between those cuts, so that the cuts look like an asterisk. Cut about 1/4" off of each point, so that you have a small hole in the center.

Lay the lid flat, with the bottom side up, and run a line of hot glue or craft glue close to the outside edge. Stick the pompoms to the glue, with about 1/3 of the pompom hanging past the edge of the lid.

Glue the Christmas bow to the bottom of the wreath. If you desire, you may also glue tiny decorations, pine cones, presents, or other ornaments to the wreath. When the glue has dried, slip the wreath over the doorknob.

How To Make a Pompom:

Cut two1-1/2" circles out of posterboard or scrap cardboard (like a cereal box). Measuring in ½" from the outside edge of the circles, cut a 1" hole in the center of each circle. Your cardboard rings should resemble flat doughnuts.

Cut four strands of medium-weight yarn about a yard long, and hold them together. Beginning with one end, wrap the strands through the center hole and around the cardboard ring. Use the crochet hook to pull all the strands through the center at the same time. Continue to wrap the circle evenly, holding the strands as flat as possible and slightly overlapping each wrap. When you get back to where you started, wrap a second layer over the first. Wrap the yarn snugly, but not tight enough to stretch it.

Using small scissors with sharp points, carefully work the points between the two cardboard circles and cut the yarn loose around the edge. Cut a piece of yarn about 6" long and work the middle of the strand in between the circles (like flossing teeth). Wrap the yarn ends around the center of the pompom in opposite directions one time, then tie the pompom together securely with a square knot.

Gently work the cardboard circles off the pompom on either side. Use your fingers to fluff the pompom into shape, then trim off any yarn ends that stick out. Don't fret if your home-made pompom isn't perfectly round like the premade ones; that's part of the charm of handmade crafts!
