Great for 4H., Scouts, and Bazaars

Creating easy homemade Christmas ornaments makes your Christmas tree special. My family's favorite ornaments are the ones that we have made over the years. Each homemade Christmas ornament has a story behind it. My husband and I started making these for a booth we had at a craft mall.

Materials:

Plastic Canvas

Red, White and Green Yarn

Darning needle

Decorative thread

Scissors

Potpourri

Instructions:

Cut the plastic canvas into squares consisting of 12 lines by 12 lines. The Christmans ornaments are cubes. Each homemade ornament requires 6 squares. Stitch a design such as a candy cane, Christmas tree, holly branch or a star on 4 of the canvass squares. Leave two squares plain for the top and bottom of the cube.

Make the Cube:

Take two squares with a design on them and use an overhand stitch or whip stitch to connect them along one side. Stitch another square to the opposite side, so that when you lay the squares flat, they are in a straight line. Stitch a plain square to the top of the middle square. Stitch a plain square to the bottom of the middle square. Add the final square to one of the other stitched squares.

Form the squares into a box and stitch all sides and bottom closed. Leave the top open and fill the box with your favorite potpourri. Stitch the top closed. Add decorative string to hang the box from a tree.

Suggestions:

Use pine or woodsy scented potpourri to give an artificial Christmas tree a natural fragrance. Sparkly yarn makes the ornamets look festive. Try varying the plastic canvass color to create different looks.
