Easy Christmas Plays for Children that Are Classic

Try One of These Time Tested Plays This Christmas

T.K. Moyer
Christmas plays for children can be the cutest performances and they can also be the most embarrassing plays to perform. If you are looking for classic Christmas plays for your children to perform this Christmas try one of the following. Each of these plays have lines that children can learn easily, and we have tried to find a wide range of set designs and costumes in order to meet as many needs as possible. These are my picks for the best Christmas plays for children that are also classic Christmas plays.

A Christmas Reunion by M.D. Sterling
This classic Christmas play introduces all of the characters from famous nursery rhymes. Children will love playing the roles of Mother Goose, Father Time, Jack Horner, Jack and Jill, Little Boy Blue, and others. Each of the lines in the play are written in nursery rhyme form which make memorizing the lines simple. The characters in the story use their familiar nursery rhyme lines to tell a story of giving and sharing. Set design can be as simple as an empty stage with well dressed characters or as complex as Mother Goose's house decorated with snow and icicles. Costumes should be easy to find and should compliment the historical characters.

Christmas Stockings by A.S. Weber
This Christmas play for children is a bit more musical in its form and is easy for children to memorize. The story follows the desires of school children and their stockings. Each child has a different desire for what they wish to find in their stockings, and every child has their own way of bragging about their special stocking. Set design requires a school setting. Popular themes might be the playground, the classroom, or the lunch room. Costume design can be as simple as jeans and t-shirts or you can create a more classic feel by elaborately dressing the children in school clothes that look more like the early 1900's.

A Christmas Carol for Children by Kathryn Schultz Miller
This adaptation of the popular Charles Dickens Christmas story has been well done and provides groups of every size the ability to put on a great play. The story follows Scrooge through his visions of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future and Miller has done a great job at making the lines easy for children to remember and perform. Set design and costumes are more on the elaborate side and require someone who can put together early 1900 costumes and multiple sets.

Each of these Christmas plays for children are a delight for children and their parents to see and they also teach children about the classic plays of a wonderful season. Merry Christmas.
