Easy Craft Ideas: Night Sky in a Plastic Water Bottle

S. Mavroudis
A very simple way to recycle plastic water bottles is to use them for various crafts. Water bottles can be great tools for a lot of craft constructions and one of my favorite is to create a night sky in the bottle with very little effort.

Everybody who sees it will be impressed and will want to know how you did it. Plus, it's so easy and safe to make that you can let young children participate, or even make it themselves, always with supervision!

What you will need

A plastic water or soda bottle with the lid (you can choose the size you prefer, but bigger bottles will be more impressive)

A bottle of baby oil (we actually need the baby oil and not the bottle!)

Water

A funnel (but you can do without)

Blue and brown food coloring

One tsp glitter

White glue (children should use a glue stick)

Hot glue (this one you'll probably have to apply yourself)

Small plastic stars and a moon, like the ones that glow in the dark when you stick them to the ceiling, for example. (Keep in mind that the lighter the stars are, the better they will float. You can actually make sure that they float by placing them in a glass of water and see what happens.)

Instructions

Wash and dry the plastic bottle, especially if it's a soda one. Remove the label and any stickers. This part can be tricky and you might have to use water and soap for a better result.

Fill the bottle halfway with tap water.

Add some blue food coloring and shake the bottle until the water turns blue. Add a little bit of the brown food coloring to make the blue darker. You can experiment, adding some blue and some brown, until you get the color you like for your night sky.

Add glitter and shake again -- don't worry if you don't have any, your sky will work just fine without it.

Add your plastic stars and moon (and you can have more than one if you like! It's your sky after all!)

Fill the rest of the bottle with baby oil using a funnel. If you don't have a funnel, you'll have to be very careful to avoid spills.

Make sure the mouth of the bottle and the lid are dry and then apply some white glue around the mouth and screw on the lid.

For extra protection from spills, use hot glue on the outside of the lid.

Lay the bottle on its side and enjoy your very own sky!

And now I can take a piece of the sky with me wherever I go (but perhaps not on airplanes)! Thanks a bunch! :o)
