Easy Craft for Kids: Summer Boo-Boo Jar

Barb Webb
Summer play tends to increase the number of "boo-boos." More time outdoors means more chance of injury. Common activities such as gardening, skateboarding, swimming, and playing at the playground often lead to minor cuts and scrapes.

What does this add up to? The need for a good supply of easily-accessible bandages!

Summer Boo-Boo Jars are super easy to make, look great in any room (think bathroom sink, kitchen counter,) and make fantastic gifts, too. Wonderful as teacher gifts, hostess gifts, or as a simple friendship gifts.

Summer Boo-Boo Jars

Materials:

Glass Jelly Jar (or any pint size jar with a wide jar mouth)

5 to 10 Decorative Band-Aids (Colored Band-Aids or Band-Aids with pictures)

1 Box of Standard Size Band-Aids (may be plain or decorative style)

Thin Fabric/Satin Ribbon

Scissors

Instructions:

Clean and dry glass jelly jar.

Apply decorative Band-Aids in desired pattern to the outside surface of the glass jelly jar. Encourage child to be creative and to distribute Band-Aids evenly around the surface of the jar.

Wrap ribbon around the upper lip of the glass jelly jar (just under the mouth of the jar, where the seal screw marks are located.) Cut fabric ribbon eight (8) inches longer than needed to wrap around the upper lid. The extra ribbon will be used to fashion a bow.

Tie ribbon around the upper lip of the glass jelly jar, leaving four (4) inches of ribbon. Double knot ribbon to secure it to the upper lip of the glass jelly jar. Using the two four (4) inch length of ribbon remaining, fashion a bow. Trim edges of bow as needed.

Fill glass jar with 50-count Band-Aids. Summer Boo-Boo Jar is now ready to place on a counter for use or ready for gift giving.

Additional Ideas:

Substitute Fabric/Satin Ribbon with Rick-Rack Ribbon for a fun, country look.

Use different color bandages to create a stripe pattern or a rainbow pattern on the outside surface of the glass jelly jar.

Use the jelly jar lid and seal to close the jar for storage. Instead of tying the fabric ribbon around the upper lip of the glass, tie it around the lid, instead. This is a great portable option for storing in your automobile for on-the-go boo-boo needs.

If your ribbon slips, use a dab of glue to hold it in place.

In addition to the 50-count Band-Aids, insert a purse size antibacterial spray or packets of sterile wipes into each jar for easy access to aid in cleansing wounds.
