Easy Crafts for Kids: Holiday Felt Ornament and Sachet

Barb Webb
Children love to create hand-made gifts and felt is an extra-fun and soft material to work with. Simple shapes can easily be made into ornaments or fragrant sachets for gifting. The ornaments can also be used as door hangers to help add holiday flair to the home.

Holiday Felt Ornament

Materials:
8 x 10 Felt Sheets (choose colors appropriate for the holiday)
Craft Glue (or Yarn and Yarn Needle)
Cardboard Sheet (ideally, 8 ½ x 11 or larger)
Felt Marker or Pencil
Buttons (plain or shaped)
Pillow Stuffing or Cotton Balls
Ribbon or Yarn

Instructions:

Design shape(s) to be used for ornaments or sachet. Stars, moons, circles, diamonds, and other basic shapes work best. Shape should be at least 4 inches by 4 inches.

Trace outline of shape onto base felt sheet (color of your choice.) Repeat. You should now have two identical felt shapes.

Using contrasting colors to base felt color, cut out a small (½ inch by ½ inch) square shape and a small triangle shape (as illustrated.)

Glue (or stitch with yarn) the square and triangle shape to the upper corner of one piece of the base felt shape (see illustration for idea of placement.)

Place base felt shape with square and triangle embellishments on top of the second felt base shape. Glue or stitch a button to the square shape to add dimension and interest to your ornament.

Glue (or stitch with yarn) one half of the base shape to the other. Allow glue to dry.

Add pillow stuffing to the center of the base shapes to "puff" out the ornament.

If you are using glue and ribbon: glue the ribbon ends to the inside of the base shape, forming a loop for hanging the ornament.

If you are using yarn stitching and ribbon: you may simply thread the ribbon through a yarn loop after securing the remainder of the base shape.

Glue (or stitch with yarn) the remainder of the base shapes.

The ornament is now ready to hang on a package, the tree, or a door handle for the holidays!

Holiday Felt Sachet

The materials and instructions are identical to the Holiday Felt Ornament with one exception: Instead of stuffing the center of the base shapes with pillow stuffing, potpourri is used to stuff the shapes.
