Easy Crafts for Toddlers: Froot Loop Pictures, Glitter Shapes or Animals, & Rock and Outside Painting

Brandi Thornsberry
Most of the crafts out around the net are not geared for toddlers. I don't understand why though. Its very important for toddlers to do crafts. It helps their hand and eye coordination and expands their motor skills. Here are some great crafts that any toddler can do with a little help.

Froot Loop Pictures

Materials:
froot loops cereal
rolling pin
plastic zip lock bag
construction paper
glue sticks

Place froot loops in the zip lock back and seal. Make sure you get all the air out of the bag before sealing it. I like to separate the colors and place them in separate bags, but you can add them all in one bag if you want. Roll the cereal so it turns into sand like form.

Give your child a glue stick and a large piece of paper. Have them draw a picture with the glue stick. swirls and scribbles are just fine.

Give them a baggie with the smashed cereal in it and show them how to sprinkle it on the glue. If you have extra shakers then fill the shakers with the cereal and let them shake it on the picture.

When they are done with their picture, give it a quick shake over the garbage or another piece of paper so you can re use the left overs. Lay the artwork flat for a few hours so it can dry.

Give them a new piece of paper and let them enjoy the fun of making another great masterpiece.

Glitter shapes or animals

Material:
construction paper
scissors
glue sticks
glitter and confetti
small box with lid or small container
rubber bands
wax paper

Cut out shapes or animals from the construction paper. If you teaching your toddler shapes, then use shapes. If you teaching them animals, then use animals. This is fun and can be a great learning tool.

Give your toddler the shapes and a glue stick. Help them cover both sides of the shapes with glue.

Place one at a time in the box. Add some glitter and confetti and seal the box or container with the rubber band.

Hand the box to your toddler and both of you count to ten while he is shaking the box.

Lay out wax paper on the counter. open the box and show your toddler what they made. Lay on the wax paper so it can dry.

Place a new one in the box and start the process over.

Rock Painting
a great project that combine indoor and outdoor fun.

Materials:
container with lid (one you don't like)
paper
scissors
glue
washable tempera paint
rocks (different sizes and shapes)

Take your toddler outside and go rock hunting. Let them help you choose some rocks for your project.

Cut a piece of paper so that it will fit the bottom of your container. Glue the paper in place. Let dry for a few minutes.

Take some paint and pour a little in a bowl. Let your child dip the rock into the paint. (this is why you need washable)

Place the rock into the container and close the lid. Let your toddler shake the container while you both count to ten.

Open the lid and show your toddler what design he has just made with the rock. Take another rock and dip it into another color. Place it in the same box with the other rock and shake them. Repeat the process until you have used every color.

Outside Painting
even my older kids love this one

Materials:
Liquid washable tempera paints
plastic squirt bottle (dollar store)
large piece of paper
clothesline

Fill the bottles with water. You want it to be around 3/4 of the way full. add a few cupfulls of paint. Just enough to add nice color to the water. If you add to much paint you will get the nozzle clogged and have no fun. Close bottle and shake well.

Hang the paper on the clothesline outside. Let the children spray paint the paper. They can adjust the nozzles for different flows and designs. Make sure they stand a few feet away from the paper.
