Easy Crochet Halloween Costume Pattern: Bumblebee Beanie and Scarf for Children

A Costume to Keep Kids Warm

islandermom
Crochet bumblebee beanies and scarves with this easy crochet project. I created this costume pattern to fit infants, toddlers, and children up to 8 years old. Single stitch is used for this pattern to make a snug warm fit. Children will continue to get use of their bumblebee costumes long after Halloween ends.

Supplies Needed:

1 skein yellow yarn

1 skein black yarn

Size "H" crochet hook

1 large eye sewing needle

I used Red Heart yarn to crochet the bumblebee beanie and scarf. Feel free to use yarn of your own preference. This crochet project is simple enough to customize to your own liking.

Bumblebee Beanie

For an infant size bumblebee beanie: Chain 48, toddler size chain 55, or child age 5-8 chain 60 using black yarn. Join chain together with a slip stitch to form a circle.

Chain one and single crochet through each stitch to form second row. Continue with rows 3-15 for infant size, 3-18 for toddler, or 3-21 for child age 5-8.

To make yellow stripe: First tie off black yarn. Then bring in yellow yarn with a slip stitch. Chain one and single crochet through each single crochet. Continue with rows 16-22 for infant size, 23-26 for toddler, or 27-29 for child age 5-8.

Tie off yellow yarn. Next slip stitch in black yarn. Chain one and single crochet through each stitch. Continue with rows 23-33 for infant size, 34-42 for toddler, or 34-45 for child age 5-8.

Begin to decrease stitches each row. Start by decreasing by five stitches. Space out the dropped stitches to prevent buckling of the beanie shape. With each row decrease more stitches.

As I'm crocheting the beanie, I check the size by placing it on my child's head to insure the beanie remains the correct size. It's okay to have more or less rows than listed above. Making the beanie fit and keep shape is more important.

Tie of black yarn after the stitches have closed off at the top of the beanie.

To make antennas: Slip stitch black yarn into one of the stitches on top-left of the beanie. Chain 6 for infant size, chain 8 for toddler, or chain 10 or children 5-8. Turn hook, skip first stitch from hook and single crochet into remaining stitches. Slip stitch into beanie to secure antennae into place. Do the same for the right antennae.

Weave in loose yarn ends into underside of the bumble bee beanie. This not only hides the loose ends but further secures the antennas. Properly secured antennas will stand upright.

Bumblebee Scarf

For a toddler size scarf: Chain 11 with yellow yarn or chain 16 for a child age 5-8. Next turn and skip stitch closest to hook. Then single crochet through each stitch. Chain one and single crochet through each stitch to form row 2. Continue with rows 3-12 for toddler, or 3-18 for child age 5-8. Tie off yellow yarn.

Slip stitch black yarn, chain one and single crochet through each stitch. Continue with rows 13-19 for toddler, or 19-25 for child age 5-8.

Repeat pattern until desired length.

Weave in loose yarn ends.

For tassels: Cut black and yellow yarn to 8 inches. Take four of each color and fold in half. Thread through left-bottom end of scarf to form a loop. Take the ends and pull through loop and pull tight. Repeat with every other stitch. Then repeat again with the other end of scarf.

Queen Bee Crown

To make crown: Chain 8 for infant, chain 10 for a toddler, or 15 for children age 5-8 with yellow yarn. Slip stitch chain together to form circle. Then chain one and single crochet into each stitch. Next chain four, turn, skip the first stitch closest to hook and single crochet into chain. Single crochet into next two stitches in the base of crown. Next chain 3, turn and skip stitch closest to hook. Then single crochet into chain. Single crochet into next two stitches in base of crown. Repeat one more time to make the third point in crown. Slip stitch into base of crown.

Sew crown center-front of beanie with yellow yarn to secure crown. Weave in yarn ends into underside of bumblebee beanie.

This is very cute. Probably a little too complicated still yet for Halloween this year. Maybe i'll be able to make something similar for Halloween next year though!
