Easy to Make Decoupage Napkin Rings
Decoupage Napkin Rings Can Be Designed to Match Your Home Decor or Created for the Holidays
Materials:
cardboard tubes (paper towel)
exacto knife (optional)
thin cardboard (empty cereal box)
decoupage glue
small paint brush
glue gun/glue sticks
fabric
Directions:
Be sure to cover your work surface with newspaper or plastic, decoupage can get a bit messy sometimes. To begin your decoupage napkin rings, start by cutting the cardboard tube into rings that measure approximately an inch wide. Cut as many cardboard rings as you need, to create your set of decoupage napkin rings.
Be sure to use fabric that has fairly large details, that can be cut out into shapes. These will become your decorations for the top of your decoupage napkin rings. Some suggestions you might consider are: flowers, grapes, apples etc. For the holidays: pumpkins, little turkeys, snow flakes, Christmas trees, stars etc.
Cut out small irregular pieces of fabric approximately an inch in size, to decorate the cardboard rings. Using the small paint brush, apply some decoupage glue to a small section of the cardboard ring. Place a piece of the cut fabric onto the decoupage and smooth it in place. Continue this procedure until the entire napkin ring has been covered in fabric. This would include the edges as well as the inside of the cardboard ring. Follow this step, to cover all of your napkin rings. Let the decoupage napkin rings dry thoroughly.
While your decoupage napkin rings are drying, you can begin working on the decorative shapes for the top. Find the shape on the fabric that you plan to use for the top of your napkin rings and cut around the design. It isn't necessary to cut it close to the picture, just yet. Now take a piece of the thin cardboard, a little larger than the shape you are using and paint on a layer of decoupage glue. Now press your fabric design onto the cardboard and smooth it out. Next, apply a coat of decoupage glue to the top. Continue this step for the remainder of your napkin ring decorations. Let the decorations dry.
While your decorations are drying, go back and apply another a coat of decoupage glue to your decoupage napkin rings.
Once the decorations have dried, turn them over and apply a solid color (coordinating) fabric to the back of each one. Again, let them dry completely. Now carefully cut around the shape of your design, to remove the excess cardboard and fabric. Leaving just your design. Now using the hot glue, attach your decorations to the napkin rings. You have finished crafting, a new set of decoupage napkin rings.
