Easy DIY Landscape Design Ideas

When it comes to making your front or backyard landscape beautiful, you don't have to hire a landscaper. You can take a do-it-yourself approach. Here are four DIY landscape design tips you can use to boost your home's curb appeal.

Incorporate flower pots and hanging baskets: If you have a lawn with very little space to have the flower bed you want, consider using potted plants to add bursts of color to your landscape. You can set them on your porch or hang them from Sheppard's hooks firmly rooted in the lawn. The best place to get flowers for your flower pots and hanging baskets is your local farmers market.

Build a block retaining wall: For a garden or flowerbed on your lawn consider building a block retaining wall for your landscape design. A block retaining wall not only creates a focal point, but also helps create a uniformed look for your landscaping project.

It is quite simple to build a block retaining wall. First, you can visit your local home improvement or garden center and select the blocks you need. There are a variety of concrete retaining wall blocks in various sizes. The size retaining wall block you choose depends on the size of your home and the area you're landscaping. You want the size of your retaining walls to fit in well.

Enlist the help of a few friends to install your retaining block wall. As you set up the wall have someone make sure you're lining up the wall the way you intended. That way you won't waste time putting the blocks in place. The best thing about retaining block walls is that if you don't like your design, you can always move them.

Use ornamental trees: Another do-it-yourself landscape tip to consider is planting an ornamental tree. If you've got an area of your landscape you'd like to have a cozy feel, choose an ornamental tree for your lawn. Some popular ornamental trees are Saucer Magnolias, Dogwood and Japanese Maple.

Choose a tree that fits in well with any garden colors you may have in your landscape. Also be mindful of the expected height of the tree. Finish the landscaped look by placing mulch and garden rocks around the base of the tree.

Choose plants that vary with the seasons: You'll want to have color on your landscaped lawn all year around. To do this use a variety of plants that are in bloom at different times of the year. Also select some evergreen plants for greenery all year around.
