Easy DIY Ways to Remodel Your Kitchen on a Budget

Richard Banks
Ask a realtor which area of a home returns the most value, and they will tell you the kitchen. There is over a 50% return on invested capital in relation to remodeling expense. The down side of a remodel project is the amount of capital needed. The financial stability of many homeowners is on the rocks. Mortgage failures are rampant, and more people are faced with foreclosure than reselling options.

What homeowners must consider doing is biting the bullet and immersing themselves in the realm of millions of do-it-yourself experts. Being a DIY specialist is easy if a homeowner focuses on key improvement areas and saves money in the process. Here are some easy ways to remodel your kitchen on your own and on a budget.

Kitchen Cabinets

The easiest DIY remodel project is to replace the hardware on the kitchen cabinets. Think functionality instead of appearance. Purchase clearance knobs at local hardware stores for deals. For cheaper alternatives, hit the yard sale circuit and visit thrift stores. Depending on the amount of cabinets in the kitchen, homeowners can expect to spend less than $20.

Another DIY tip to consider for remodeling your kitchen on a budget is creating a distressed look for the cabinets. Instead of new, think rustic. Remove paint, sand down the cabinets, and add a coat of sealer. Total cost is under $10 for all of the supplies. Or, if you have old, outdated cabinets, sometimes a little sanding and a coat of white paint can go a long way.

Kitchen Floors

The thought may seem strange, but a clean floor adds value to any DIY remodel of your kitchen. What homeowners need to understand is that all floors can be waxed, just not with the same wax. First, start by deep-cleaning the floor. Once the cleaning is complete, utilize a stripping agent to remove any build-up the deep cleaning didn't remove.

Finally, put one light coat of wax on the floor and let dry for at least six hours. Once the floor is dry, the process will not need to be repeated for approximately two weeks. This may change based on weather conditions and traffic levels. The total cost of supplies will be $50 to $100, but it will be worth it. Purchase wax and stripper from hardware stores and not specialty cleaning stores.

Kitchen Countertops

When considering do-it-yourself kitchen renovations for homeowners on a budget, countertops are not usually the first project on the list. New countertops can easily cost homeowners $5000 or more. What most homeowners don't realize is that there is an inexpensive alternative to expensive countertops: faux countertops.

With a cost of approximately $50, homeowners can purchase a kit to turn the drab into extraordinary. The first step is to clean the existing countertops. Included in the kit is a black primer. Paint the counter top with black primer and allow 6 hours for drying purposes. There are three paints included. Pour onto a Styrofoam plate and don't mix. Take the included sponge and blot each color onto the dried, black, primed countertop.

Once the three colors have dried, a homeowner will be the proud owner of brand new faux granite countertops.

Adding value to a home doesn't mean breaking the bank. Simply follow these do-it-yourself kitchen renovations for homeowners on a budget to again feel pride in your space.

Good information. Refitting a kitchen from scratch is nicer of course, but horrendously expensive. I didn't know about the countertop refurbishment. That might come in handy for us, ours are not good.
