A very easy fondant recipe is made using corn syrup, shortening, confectioner's sugar and flavoring. You will also want food coloring in various colors. You can buy basic food coloring in the baking aisle of any grocery store. For more colors, you will need to shop at a cake decorating store.
Ingredients for easy fondant:
1 cup light corn syrup
1 cup shortening
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
2 pounds confectioners' sugar
food coloring
Mix the corn syrup and the shortening in a large bowl. Mix in the salt and vanilla and a bit of the food coloring. Then gradually add the confectioners' sugar until it forms a stiff dough.
If you are using a mixer for the fondant, you will need the dough hook attachment. If you are kneading by hand, dust your hands with confectioners' sugar so the dough will not stick to your hands. Add more food coloring as necessary to get your desired color.
Once the dough is firm but smooth, wrap it in plastic wrap or put it in an air tight container and refrigerate until chilled. Then roll the fondant on a smooth surface that has been dusted with confectioners' sugar. Roll the fondant out until it is about 1/8 inch thick. Then drape the fondant over your cake and smooth it down. Cut any fondant that hangs from the bottom of the cake and keep it for decorations.
After you have your cake covered, roll out different colors of fondant and cut the fondant into shapes like flowers, stars, hearts or any shape you want. Add the cut outs to the cake as you wish. You can also cut strips of fondant to create stripes or circles to create polka dots.
If you want, you can also use your favorite frosting to add piping to the cake. You can also add decorations like colored sugar or decorator's candy. Fresh cut flower heads are also a nice decoration for cakes. They sky is the limit when it comes to cake decorating!
