There is something about Halloween that brings out the creativity in kids. Whether they are imagining the scary monster that hides under the bed, or busy making Halloween decorations, energy levels soar as kids prepare for the big night. This Moon and Ghost mobile craft is simple enough for preschoolers to make for Mom, while appealing to older children, as well.
Things You Need:
- Paper plate
- Yellow-orange paint
- Glue
- Paper punch
- Fishing line
- Fabric scraps
- Begin by painting both sides of the paper plate a bright yellow or yellow-orange. Allow to dry.
- Cut a crescent moon shape from opposite sides of the paper plate. Be sure to create a pattern for the crescent moon before cutting, as both sections must match exactly.
- Glue the two crescent moon shapes together so that the bottom beveled edge of the plate faces outward. This gives the crescent moon depth.
- Crumple paper into a 1/2 to 1 inch ball to make the head of your ghost. A tissue works well for this, as it is lightweight and easy for little hands to handle.
- Drape a tissue or lightweight gauze fabric over the ball of paper. Adjust so that it hangs evenly over the ball.
- Gather the fabric under the ball and tie it tightly with a piece of string. This creates the ghost's head and flowing white body.
- Dot eyes with a fine point marker. Use caution if you use tissues as fabric for the ghosts, as the ink will bleed quickly creating a large blob.
- Cut out images of black cats, bats or pumpkins from the appropriate color construction paper.
- Tape a 4- to 6-inch section of fishing line to the back of the figures.
- Punch a hole near the top of the moon and attach fishing line or string to hang the moon.
- Punch holes around the perimeter for hanging the ghosts and cutouts. Slip the fishing line through the holes and tie off to create a crescent moon mobile.
- Hang the mobiles in a window, or allow children to use them to decorate their room for Halloween. This quick and easy craft adds Halloween cheer to the classroom or home and allows children to show off their handiwork with pride.
