Easy Homemade Ballerina Costume Ideas

Skyler Raine
A ballerina costume can consist of many different pieces, so feel free to mix and match to create the perfect look for your little dancer. Girls should pull their hair back into a tight, neat bun. Find a leotard and tights. You can make a tutu using stiff organza material and hot glue rhinestones or sequins. You can also make a "flowy" skirt by attaching tulle to a ribbon or elastic waist band. If you can't find real ballet shoes, white or pink house shoes that look like slippers can work just as good. While trick-or-treating you can practice your dance moves and twirl around or stand on your toes.

Ballerina's don't usually wear a lot of accessories so you can put on lots of pretty make up and add a ribbon to her hair. To make a costume really sparkly you can just add lots of sequins and rhinestones. Remember that ballerina costumes can come in any material or color so whether it's a shiny dress and tights, a tulle skirt, or a skin tight leotard, your girl should feel like a pretty ballerina in almost anything.

If your daughter doesn't want to be just any kind of plain ballerina, you could opt for a unique twist and create a "jewelry box ballerina" costume. This costume will involve several materials and steps, but it is still possible to make at home in a short amount of time. You will need some cardboard boxes, felt, foil, plastic jewelry, ribbon or elastic and hot glue. First, cut out a hole in the top of a box that will fit around your daughter's body. Then, measure two pieces of ribbon or elastic and glue to the inside of the hole. These two pieces will act as straps to go over her shoulders to keep the box held up. Next, cut out a separate piece of cardboard to stand tall behind her back. Cover both pieces of any color felt and then glue on the foil to the back piece to look like a mirror. Use smaller boxes covered in felt and attach to the front of the main body box to look like drawers. Use the hot glue to attach the plastic jewelry to the tops of the drawers. Now all you need to add is your daughter, dressed as a ballerina in either a leotard or frilly dress. Don't forget the tights and slippers!
