Homemade Halloween Decoration Idea #1:
Flying Ghosts
I am sure you have at least one tree in your yard, but if you don't these can be hung anywhere in your house that you have room for. First you will need some supplies:
1-Old White Flat Bed Sheet
2-Black Permanent Marker
3-Cheap Bag of Round White Balloons
4-String (white thread would be preferable)
5-Wire Coat Hangers (number of these needed will be determined on how many ghost you will actually make)
6-Paper Clips (if hanging them inside)
First decide how many ghost you want to create. Next, take your flat sheet and cut out as many sections as you will need to make the desired number of ghosts. Preferably a complete square cut out will work the best. It will give you equal amount for the ghost all around. The size of the squares will be determined by you as well. Bigger squares equal bigger ghosts, as well as smaller squares will equal smaller sized ghosts.
Next you will need to blow up as many balloons as you have square sheet cut outs. If you want you ghosts head to be big, then blow up the balloon as much as you possibly can. If you want the head to be small then don't fill that balloon up all the way. After you have blown the balloons up to the desired size and tied the end in a knot, take one of the square sheet cut outs and place the center of the cut out directly on top of the balloon. Bunch up the sheet at the bottom of the balloon and use your thread to tie it off to form the head. The bottom half will then hang for the body. Try to pull the tied end of the balloon (access balloon) through before tying the thread tightly.
Use your wired coat hanger and stick the hook end in the bottom of the head part where the access balloon (the tied part) was pulled through. This will give your sheet more ability to spread out and look like arms under the sheet.
Carefully take the black permanent marker and draw 2 circle eyes on the head. Cut about a foot length of thread and slide it under the other part of the string that was used to create the tie off for the head. Once you have pulled your string through tie it with the other end to make a circle. If at this point you want to place the ghost in the tree all you will need to do is use the piece of thread you tied to make a hook and hang them all over the branches. If you are planning to hang them inside then add a paper clip to the top of the thread hook circle and place them in your house!
Homemade Halloween Decoration Idea #2:
Pumpkin Walkway Lights
Everyone loves those pathway lights that will give your walkway a spooky feel, but not everyone has an outlet near by to hook them up to. I know I don't, so I have to improvise with pumpkins. Every year I will go to my local farmers market to buy my pumpkins. Since I end up buying at least 10 medium size ones this is cheaper for me to get them from there then lets say Wal Mart.
After I get home with them I usually clean out each pumpkin and decide on a good cut out. Once I cut the pumpkins out I will place them on my walkway at least one to two feet apart. I will then buy some really cheap candles (the ones that are like 33 cents a piece) and put at least 3 to 4 in the bottom of the pumpkin. Light them up and you have created your own homemade Halloween lighted pathway! No electric needed!
Homemade Halloween Decoration Idea #3:
Scary Trick Or Treat Guy:
Every year when I was a kid there was this one house that had a fake witch, scarecrow, or ghost sitting on the front porch. The prop would sit in a chair, kind of slouched down and hold a bucket of candy in his lap. There would be a sign on the bucket that would say "One Piece Or Suffer". When an unsuspected kid would walk up to grab the candy out of the bucket they would always try to test the waters and take more then one. At that point the prop came to life and would grab the little kids hand. Now the kid would run and become scared out of his mind. After many years of being fooled by this, I finally figured out the prop was a real man dressed up.
If this sounds like a great idea for your house, then picking the ghost costume would be easy as pie. Make sure you have a large enough white sheet with blackened out holes for the eyes. Don't put the colored eyes in the exact same spot as your own because you are going to want to be able to see out of the sheet when a kid is coming. Make sure you keep your hands under the sheet so the children don't realize you are real.
Old pair of jeans and worn out tennis shoes will complete the attire but try to stuff the jeans will newspaper or Wal Mart bags so you can have a stuffed prop look and feel.
Now a days grabbing the kids might send your butt to jail so instead of using your hands when the kids grab an extra piece then just start shaking the bowl and making ghosts sounds! I am so sure your house will be a great one they will talk about for years! Look at me, I am 28 and I still remember it to this day!
Homemade Halloween Decoration Idea #4:
Creepy Spiders For Your Pathway
If you were to walk up to someones door and saw a bunch of spiders laying around the place it would probably creep you out. This idea is to give the little kiddies a spooky feel when they walk to the door with the trick or treat in mind.
Items you will need are:
Steele Wool Pads, Brillo Pads are good (the smaller the better)
Silver Floral Wire (try to get the foot long wire. Also a bag of 50 will make at least 7-14 spiders)
Wire Cutters
Red and Black Spray Paint
Take the steel wool pads and spray paint them a deep red and black (one color for each spider, alternate colors for each pad). Allow them to dry overnight. While your letting the spiders bodies to dry, take the floral wire and cut them in half. If you want, you can spray pain them black as well, but you don't have to. If you do decide to spray paint them, please allow them to dry overnight as well.
The next day decide if the pads (and the wires if you decided to paint them as well) need any paint touch up. If they do then apply the paint and give them significant amount of time to dry. If they don't need a touch up continue onto the next step.
Bend the wires that you have cut, half way. This will allow you to set them up on their legs. Stick one end of the wire into the Brillo pad. Make sure you put three legs on each side. After you are done you can spray the Brillo pad again with the legs in it to create a good bond for the wires to stick!
Place these all around your door or even better, add them to your bushes or flower beds for a creepy added touch!
