If you don't want to worry about getting out the food coloring and going through the mess, than try permanent markers. Choose a selection of 5-10 colors and be sure to get fine point tips. You can write directly on the egg shell with whatever pattern, picture, or message you would like. This works better for older children who can handle just writing where they are supposed to. Use rubber gloves if you are afraid of rub off occurring before the marker dries. Avoid resting your hand on part of the egg shell as you write or you will drag the color with your hand. Using permanent markers with a fine tip will allow you to have better control over your medium, and show forth a sharper finished look.
Another fun and colorful idea includes the use of wrapping paper or tissue paper. This can be a little trickier than other methods of decorating because you still want to be able to eat the egg, so you can't wrap it all around. Choose two opposite sides of the egg to decorate and, using non-toxic craft glue, adhere a cut out decoration from festive wrapping paper or tissue paper. Keep the paper smooth pressing lightly on the image while the glue is still wet. Allow one side to dry before decorating the other side; it will also look good with just one side decorated if you plan on displaying them for a little while. Be sure not to cover the entire egg with wrapping or it will be difficult to open it and will not be as appetizing for consumption.
Other ideas include using ribbon, glitter glue, and stickers. You can glue a simple bow to one side or write someone's name in glitter glue. You can usually find a small tube of glitter glue in a variety of colors that has a controllable dispense top. Glitter glue is easier than using regular glitter with glue because it allows you to just place the glitter where you want it to be. Regular glitter will be everywhere and make it hard to peel the egg and have it come out without any glitter on it; so stick with the glue that has glitter in it already. You can also use stickers to decorate with; these must be small so that they can fit on the curve of the egg shell without bunching up. Use fabric paints to create an outline around the sticker image to add a 3D look.
So start a new tradition; imagination is the limit.
