Easy Ideas for Remodeling Your Attic

Scott Kessman

If you're thinking of converting your attic into another room in your house, there are a number of ways you can go about doing it. Below are listed some of the most popular attic ideas.

Attics are often forgotten or used indiscriminately for storing all those bits of old furniture and broken appliances that you don't know what to do with but don't seem able to get rid of. This is where these classic attic ideas come in, helping you to obtain an extra living room in your home, a more organized storage area, a bedroom or a games or music room.

When looking at attic ideas, the first point to think about is how you're going to get up to your new room. Stairs may seem to be the obvious choice but they do take up quite a bit of space. Why not think about buying some foldable stairs that retract into the wall or ceiling. If you intend to turn your attic into a bedroom or a game room, it is best to have fixed stairs so that you can reach your new room without too much effort.

Other things you need to think about when turning an attic into a room are ventilation and light. As always, natural light is best and windows are the perfect way to provide this along with ventilation. As attics normally have a sloping roof, you need to plan carefully how you're going to fit the windows. If the roof meets floor, or ends just above it, the best choice is what are called dormers, that is extended windows. If the roof ends at least four feet above the floor, small glass windows in this wall are another option. But perhaps the most inspiring sight in any attic conversion is that provided by the installation of skylights. These will provide the room with plenty of natural light and at night you can gaze at the stars through them.

You can decorate your new attic room with blinds for the windows or shades for the skylight. Fitting a bath is one of the more ambitious attic ideas.
